Poll: Newsom has 9-point lead over Maldonado
July 10, 2010
A new Field Poll shows that San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom currently enjoys a 9-point lead over former state Senator Abel Maldonado in the race for lieutenant governor. [San Francisco Chronicle]
The poll shows Newsom leading Maldonado, who was appointed to serve as lieutenant governor last spring, by 9 points, with 23 percent still undecided.
However, the Field Poll also found Newsom has higher negatives than Maldonado, who served the Central Coast in both the State Senate and Assembly. More than 40 percent of those polled expressed a negative opinion of Newsom. The number jumps to 66 percent among Republicans.
“It’s still early. Relatively few people are aware of any of the candidates except Newsom,” said Field Poll director Mark DiCamillo. “His lead is based on name recognition – it’s not really a level playing field yet, but it will be before we get to the election.”
