Spotlight: What’s happening this weekend

After the all-day barbecues, fireworks and festivities of Fourth of July weekend, it’s time to relax a little bit and get back into the swing of a more relaxing weekend. The different events being held on the Central Coast in the coming week will offer more educational opportunities for the kiddies, raunchy humor for the daring adults and a nighttime concert at Downtown Brewing Company sure to keep your teenager from sitting in front of the television all night long.

Let your kids get down and dirty in compost during a gardening workshop hosted by the San Luis Obispo Children’s Museum Friday, July 9. The event is from noon to 1 p.m. and is open to all children.

Saturday is guaranteed to be a busy day for anyone looking for music, food and laughs. Top Dog Coffee Bar in Morro Bay will be hosting a block party on Main Street between Morro Bay and Harbor boulevards featuring Dr. Laura Schlessinger. She will be showcasing her personalized tote bags with proceeds going to Operation Family Fund, an organization that provides support for those affected by the war on terrorism. Blues musicians Lenny Blue and the Otter Guys will be performing and ClayHouse wines will be showcasing their wine. In addition, the Morro Bay Police Department will be barbecuing with proceeds going to their K-9 unit.  The block party will be held from 4 to 6 p.m.

Leave the block party feeling good about donating and head over to Harman Hall in the Christopher Cohan Performing Arts Center at Cal Poly to see the Queen of Mean, Lisa Lampanelli. Her raunchy comedy and willingness to say things most people are too afraid to think has earned Lampanelli praise from Howard Stern and a fan base from the United States to Canada and the United Kingdom. Her show starts at 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 10 and is hosted by GALA, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance of the Central Coast. Visit the Cal Poly Arts website for ticket information.

Continue with GALA’s festivities Sunday at Mission Plaza. The group will be hosting Pride in the Plaza at Mission Plaza as a part of the 2010 Pride Celebration. Bring the whole family for a 25-foot climbing wall, face painting, bounce house, food court and concerts. A full bar and wine tasting will also be available for the 21 and older. The event will be from noon to 5:30 p.m.

On Wednesday, get your older kids out of the house to enjoy a performance by The Supervillans at Downtown Brew. The ska/reggae band has been on the road during the past two years with popular act Pepper before branching out to build their fan base. The all ages show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available in advance for $9 at Boo Boo Records or at the door for $10.
