Landscaper savaged by pit bull in Nipomo

August 24, 2010

A landscaper who was mauled by a pit bull in Nipomo on Monday morning is recovering from massive wounds to his face. [KCOY]

Craig Groth, 48, was trying to save two Jack Russell terriers from a large gray pit bull that had pounced on them when the dog savagely bit Groth in the face.

The terriers had wandered out of the their yard on Waypoint Drive.

The pit bull, with blood dripping from its face, ran across the street to a home on Waypoint Drive. However, the homeowner later claimed the dog did not live there anymore.

If a dog is off-leash and injures someone, the animal’s owners are subject to criminal penalties, heavy fines and or jail time. In addition, San Luis Obispo County Animal Services could quarantine and possibly put down the dog.

According to Wikipedia, a Pit Bull (or Pit Bull mix) was responsible for 50-75% of human deaths each year from 2005 – 2009. Unfortunately, there is a percentage of our population that think that it’s cool to get a Pit Bull because they have the reputation that they can kill.

i was in the Bay Area in June when news that a 2 year old was killed by 3 of the family’s pit bulls (they had a total of 5). The grandfather was arrested for child endangerment.

If people have the right to keep these type of dogs, I should have a right to know where they are in my neighborhood so I can decide if I want my kids to walk by that home, especially when it’s obvious that the people that live there are not responsible pet owners.

Not many people attacked by Jack Russel Terriers, even in packs of them. So lets say they were kids instead of terriers, and the man was hurt trying to protect the kids instead of the dogs… My point is that the pit bull owner is a little more responsible and bit bulls shouldn’t ever be let loose in public (unless maybe their missing legs and muzzled)

Also sounds like the “owner” shot and buried the dog in an unmarked grave hoping to avoid being sued.

This is the fault of the pitbull owner. The dog is dangerous, the dog attacked two dogs and a human. The owners are 100% RESPONSIBLE for the actions of their dangerous dog. Any dog this dangerous has to be kept locked up at all times with extra precautions to assure the animal does not escape. My neighbors pit killed my other neighbors mini poodle. The dog ran into my yard with the poodle in his mouth, I shot him. I was protecting my family, my property and myself. I don’t trust them and they do have a problem with other animals.

Where are all the dog supporers on this issue? This article leaves a lot unanswered. Were the Jack Russels leashed? Were they also running loose in the neighborhood? I feel horrible that this man was attacked by a dog. I also feel horrible for the dogs involved. If they were all unleashed running loose they all have irresponsible owners. I think all the owners are somewhat culpable for this situation if that turns out to be the case.

For those of you that encourage banning of the breed, you need to read the stats on actual occurences of dog bites. Truth be told, it is not Pit Bulls that are even close to the front runners. Irresponsible owners are the problem with Pit Bulls. Pit Bulls have been shown to be THE breed most eager to please their human companions. When bred and raised right they are sweet and loyal companions. People are the problem, not the dogs. Too bad we can’t ban stupid people. It’s been said a million times before, but blame the deed and not the breed.

Good thing Annie the dog didn’t bite anyone while she was out. Aussies can get nippie sometimes (being cattle dogs) and she was in a stressful situation.

Yet another loser dog owner who will face no penalties or prosecution.

When I go for walks in my neigborhood and runs in the hills, I carry a sawed off shovel handle. This suggestion was given to me “off the record” by an animal control person in the Santa Cruz mountains after I was bitten by an uncontrolled dog. I have not been bitten again since carrying my “walking stick”. The one time I was forced to use my “walking stick”, it was surprisingly effective. I suspect dog owners know they’re in the wrong because they generally grab and control their dogs when they see me approaching. It would be silly to think anyone is actually going to stop walking their dogs off leash; it would be equally silly to think animal control cares enough to do anything about the problem.

I think they should fine the owner for being a MORON in general. The statement about the dog not living there anymore kills me. What did the dog pack his things and move out!??

Fining the dog owner isn’t enough. It sounds like the landscaper sustained some rather severe injuries.

They would also have to pay all his medical bills including any plastic surgery he many require. Hope they have insurance because this is going to cost plenty.

Will Adam Hill turn this into a media event?

I do not mean to belittle the situation, and I hope for a speedy recovery for the selfless landscaper.

My point is, Hill grabbed the other dog situation by the horns, involving the perhaps-unjust transfer of an animal from one presumably loving home to another presumably loving home.

He damn well ought to pursue this instance with the same vigor.

They should be banned. This sort of thing happens all the time with this breed.

German Shepards had this stigma in the 70’s

Dobermans had it in the 80’s

Rottweilers had it in the 90’s

Now Pit Bulls have it in the 00’s — 10’s

Common Denominator? It is not the breed, but rather the breeder/owner/ignorant POS that owns the dog that is the problem. How many 100,000 good pits are out there for every 1 that ends up in the news? You would ban those 100,000 because of this incident? Are you also in favor of banning cars since they wound/injure/kill many more people that all dog breeds combined? Why do people always want to shift the blame away from the human?

Time to start carry a putting iron when out walking in pitbull territory…
