Central Coast waiting on the tsunami

Coastal areas all along the West Coast continue to be evacuated Friday morning following a Tsunami Watch/Warning issued by the National Weather Service.

Residents in Oceano, Cayucos, Port San Luis, and  Grover Beach, Morro Bay, and Avila Beach were being told to evacuate and seek higher ground.

Pacific Gas and Electric Company declared an Unusual Event at its Diablo Canyon Power Plant Unit 1 and Unit 2 in Avila Beach. All plant safety systems and components remain in normal operating condition and both units are currently operating at 100 percent power. Some flooding might occur near the main entrance to the plant.

The Tsunami Watch/Warning comes in response to the 8.9 magnitude earthquake that hit Japan on Thursday. Strong waves hit Hawaii early Friday morning, reaching as high as three feet on Oahu. Residents were evacuated in all the coastal areas.

The County Office of Emergency Services will be issuing bulletins throughout the day. Residents are advised to stay away from the ocean until further notice.

I spoke with a close friend today from Japan, the majority of her relatives reside there and she told me that the death toll is far greater than what we are hearing on the news or even what the Japanese gov is currently confirming. She estimates that at least 10,000 are dead and perhaps far more. Apparently 1000’s are missing as trains were washed away right off the tracks, as well as workers along the coast lines. She is saying that entire areas that encompass miles are not only inaccessible but that all communication (in those areas) is knocked out. Fly overs are confirming mass devastation as people are attempting to alert planes for help, even putting out large SOS signs!

Watching this disaster unfold is frightening. When i consider the earthquake, the tsunami, the fires and now the leakage from the nuclear reactors and the concerns over meltdowns, it’s just overwhelming.

My prayers are with the people of Japan, I can not imagine such a catastrophic chain reaction, the likes of what they are battling. Apparently, we use the same safe guards that Japan uses, where our nuclear power plants are concerned including encasing our reactors in air tight metal containers. I don’t feel so great about that, considering that we have power plants built on top of active fault lines.
