The California Highway Patrol determined that the 49-year-old man pulled his Ford pickup over to the right shoulder of southbound Highway 101 near San Luis Bay Drive around 3 p.m. Thursday. The man then left his vehicle and walked into the path of a truck tractor towing a semi trailer.
Paramedics transferred the man to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center, but doctors pronounced him dead around 3:40 p.m.
The name of the man is unknown, as is the reason why he walked into oncoming traffic. The Ford pickup is registered to an owner from Paso Robles.
Oceano resident Hector Navarra was driving the tractor truck that collided with the pedestrian.
The collision caused major traffic delays in the area.
