Two children killed in DUI accident near Cayucos

October 26, 2014

chpTwo children are dead, two adults are hospitalized with major injuries and a Morro Bay man is in jail after an alleged felony DUI accident Saturday north of Cayucos on Highway 1.

Shortly after 4 p.m., Tanner Mengore, 22, was driving a Chevy Avalanche at a high rate of speed when he lost control and the vehicle rolled several times. The vehicle then went off the roadway, drove into a ditch and hit a tree near Villa Creek Road.

Three passengers, a 3-year-old Los Osos boy; a 17-year-old Morro Bay boy and Wendi Brito,19, from Morro Bay, were thrown from the truck. Both boys were pronounced dead at Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center.

Wendi Brito and Michael Brito, 23, of Los Osos were transported to local hospitals with major injuries.

Mengore was treated for minor injuries at French Hospital Medical Center and then booked into the San Luis Obispo County Jail on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and DUI. He is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.

Obviously not wearing seat belts or using a car seat for the 3 year old. It’s not the lack of laws of faulty vehicles, it’s the stupidity of people! Adults are suppose to make rational choices.

Why aren’t the kids named? They didn’t commit a crime. If it turns out that the other adult passengers were drunk too, and the kids were theirs, they should hang too. How stupid do you have to be to get into a vehicle with your kids with a drunk behind the wheel. The only people I feel sorry for here are the kids and any suffering they went through.

Think about it, un-Perspicacious. It’s impossible for 19-year old or 23-year old to have a 17-year old son. So much for your keen insight and understanding of things

Um, what does that have to do with naming the victims? And, not impossible to have a stepson that close to your age. Next time, before attacking someone, please compose a response that actually answers the question that was asked. There WAS a three year old there, impossible for the parents of the three year old to be in the car? Who is looking stupid now?

You said “your kids.” A single 3-year old is not KIDS.

This is an awful situation and prayers to the families. As a parent of a three year old, I can’t imagine what the family is going through.

DUI is not just alcohol, some of these recent DUI’s are drugs.

Could some of those drugs be legal, ( I have my card) as well as illegal?

NONE of them are legal to drive under the influence of.

I didn’t say anything about legal to drive, I simply said legal to have as opposed to illegal no matter what. That is the attitude of those with cards, they imply “leave me alone I have my card and what I do is legal,” but nobody wants to talk about that they only what us to believe making weed illegal is just keeping it from a terminal cancer person in constant pain.

I avoid driving in the North County after midnight because I’m worried about drunks.

But this jerk on Hwy 1 was sloshed at 4 in the afternoon and it seems like all the recent DUI crashes have also taken place in broad daylight.

I hope Tanner Mengore gets locked up for a very, very long time.

Excuse me ma’am/sir… He was not under the influence while he was driving. And as a family member I’ve seen the blood test results, he came up negative for everything. Maybe you should stop listening to what the corrupt news tells you

You mean, he’s just a very very bad driver???

Well, he still killed two kids with his very very bad driving.

Yes, we know, he was a good boy and would never hurt anyone.

Did the “corrupt news” make up the part about a three year old child being thrown from

the car? It is VERY unlikely that if the child had been in a car seat he/she would have

been ejected. Even if the driver was sober, he is still guilty of negligent behavior.

Condolences to all of those affected by this huge senseless tragedy.

God bless all of you.

Another tragic, unnecessary result of impaired driving. Stop the carnage!

My condolences to the family and loved ones.

And yet there is no background checks, waiting period, or registry for booze buyers. The booze loby has blood on its hands along with the culture of drinking. How many deaths are too many? How many kids must die? Its time for serious booze control.

Good luck with that. It’s like gun control, you know it will never happen.

Which was my point…the big evil booze makers are as much to blame for this as the gun makers are when a murder is done with a gun. Applying the lefts hate-think to other situations shows the craziness of their ideas. You have to illustrate their stupidity by getting down to their level.

Son of a *itch. What a horrible tragedy.

No a tragedy is an accident….this was murder.
