A person died Monday evening after driving a vehicle off a cliff just north of Ragged Point. [KSBY]

The crash occurred shortly before 6 p.m., according to the CHP. Only one vehicle was involved in the accident.

A helicopter and tow truck responded to the scene, and responders worked to lift the vehicle onto Highway 1. Officials closed a portion of the highway as crews attempted to recover the vehicle.

The CHP has yet to identify the victim.

Last month, a 57-year-old Atascadero woman survived a plunge down a nearby cliff. The woman’s car rolled about 150 feet down the cliff, but she managed to climb to safety after spending three days on the hillside.

This fix is easy…SLOW DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We need to close this road from all vehicular traffic. There are far too many accidents and we cannot allow this to continue. For the safety of all citizens we can no longer allow people to drive on roads with cliffs on either side. Call congress now, or better yet ask Obama to just execute an executive order.

lol

I suspect that your sarcasm did not register with a lot of the people who gave you a thumbs down. Another bit of evidence for Poe’s Law.

calcoastnews reported that it is the season for climbing Morro Rock. Looks like it’s also the season for driving off ragged point.

I wonder if there have been prior accidents which pointed in the direction of putting some protective guard rails up.

Sure thing, indigo, that’s what the family’s attorney will argue when they sue the county for causing the death of their loved one.

How about a huge wall all the way up and down highway 1 so drivers can’t be distracted by the view.

Listening to a couple of CALTRANS reps on Congalton this evening, it sounds like they want to do some major rerouting of Hwy 1 from Piedras Blancas north to avoid constantly battling erosion and slumping problems. In the process, they plan to also incorporate 8′ wide shoulders. That should help a bit in allowing more recovery time for distracted drivers before reaching the cliffs. Unfortunately, there will still be the suicides, DUIs and asleep at the wheel types for which no realistic solution exists.

That’s Piedras Blancas area, not Ragged Point. There is no place to reroute the road once you hit the cliff areas, and no way you’ll ever get 8′ shoulders for any substantial stretch.

Sorry for the loss of the survivors. Drive defensively and conservatively, folks.
