Cal Poly offering more transgender housing

August 16, 2016

Cal Poly LargeTransgender students and their supporters can now live together starting the moment they arrive on the Cal Poly campus. By expanding the university’s transgender housing program, Cal Poly officials met one of the demands issued by a protest group that had threatened to go after President Jeffrey Armstrong’s job. Since 2012-2013, Cal Poly has offered particular students the option of obtaining gender-inclusive housing. The university defines gender-inclusive housing as an effort to support students who identify as transgender, genderqueer or gender questioning (TGQQ).

Previously, the university only offered gender-inclusive housing to returning students living in the on-campus Poly Canyon Village apartments. This fall, anyone who identifies as a member of the TGQQ community or who is supportive of the community and is comfortable with a roommate of any gender identity may live in the special housing arrangement. Gender-inclusive housing will be available in the Cerro Vista and Yosemite Hall dorms.

University officials say students who may occupy the gender-inclusive housing include individuals of the same gender or gender identity, such as members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) community, as well as supporters. Students can designate their preferences on campus housing applications.

Thus far, 128 returning students, 105 first-year students and eight transfer students have been assigned to gender-inclusive housing for the upcoming school year. About 7,000 students are expected to live on the university campus this fall.

Last year, the pro-diversity protest group SLO Solidarity ordered Cal Poly administrators to deliver on a list of 41 demands, which included mandatory gender and ethnic studies classes; gender-neutral living quarters and bathrooms; and a dramatic increase of tenure-line “faculty of color.” SLO Solidarity said it would demand a new administration if the demands are not met.

In response to the expansion of on-campus gender-inclusive housing, SLO Solidarity leader Matt Klepfer said Cal Poly took a big step toward having standard practices that exist at most other universities nationwide.

Cal Poly spokesman Matt Lazier said the change is a result of the university’s effort to create an open and welcoming environment for all members of the campus community.

What Cal Poly really needs is some trans-species housing for the administration.

Doesn’t Armstrong already have his “special” housing?, it’s reserved for the 1%ers. The housing for administration doesn’t need to be “trans-pecies”, it needs to be cut by 50%.

raccoons?

Why stop at their separate housing? Shouldn’t they have transgender ONLY classes, sports teams, cafeteria & everything else. Build it in France.

Oh for crying out loud! Seriously?

so sorry, but alot was going on in the 60’s we all loved each other. no criticism. you’re ok, i’m think i’m ok. so is my wife of 45 years. if anyone has a disagree please send me an e email. i’m fighting for all of us

Once again this article has a sensational headline and incorrect information. First it says that the housing is and was for TGQQ since 2012, factually open gender housing was available for non couples but both sexes for years, there was no mention whatsoever about the LGBTQ of TGQQ (which I don’t think existed in 2012) community.

Personally I think these numbers are misleading, many students have used the gender inclusive housing to live with friends of both sexes for years, my guess is the vast majority of the returning students are simply living with friends and do not identify as LGBTQ. Later in the article they state that starting this year, probably unbeknownst by many who applied, they changed the designation to be for the LGBTQ community and their “supporters”. I would be very curious to know how many transgender students attend Cal Poly, this article seems to imply that there are over 200, when my guess is that a good number of the students living in gender inclusive or open gender housing are straight students, especially the returning students.

Cal Poly did away with the open gender housing option and per a phone call I made, if a straight group of continuing students of both sexes wanted the old open gender option, their only choice was to apply to the gender inclusive housing and fill the apartment with their friends or accept that they may get a roommate who is LGBTQ which is acceptable to most students.

well, we bent the rules for my wife and i to live in the same room. and with a bunch of Australian surfers. surf’s up. i could say worse.

I thought segregation was bad?

Only if done by white, conservative, christian males.

All others: it’s not only OK, but expected and/or demanded. Life is funny that way.

Is Cal Poly unwittingly assisting in psychological harm of these confused souls?

“A person’s belief that he or she is something they are not is, at best, a sign of confused thinking. When an otherwise healthy biological boy believes he is a girl, or an otherwise healthy biological girl believes she is a boy, an objective psychological problem exists that lies in the mind not the body, and it should be treated as such. These children suffer from gender dysphoria. Gender dysphoria (GD), formerly listed as Gender Identity Disorder (GID), is a recognized mental disorder in the most recent edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association (DSM-V).5 The psychodynamic and social learning theories of GD/GID have never been disproved”

who ever gave me this option except for pipe smokers…Mercedes drivers?

Oh how sweet. Now Cal Poly can turn out more freakshow Starbuck’s Baristas every year.

It’s disgusting the direction our society is going.

hitting baseballs are good. the boys of summer are good.

Can we have some numbers so we can see just how much all of this nonsense is indeed in need. I would recommend that the university concentrate on education not accommodation.

Education, not accommodation!

I like it!

sorry; is every minority getting the way? so much bs
