California voters oppose gas tax hike

June 11, 2017

California voters are overwhelming opposed to the gas tax hike that is set to take effect later this year, according a poll released by the UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies (IGS).

The results of the poll indicate 58 percent of California voters oppose SB 1, the gas tax law, while only 35 percent of voters support it. Additionally, 39 percent of voters strongly oppose the gas tax law, while only 14 percent strongly support it, according to the IGS poll.

Both large majorities of Republican and independent voters oppose the gas tax hike, according to the poll. Strongly liberal voters make up the only group in which a large majority supports the tax hike. Also, all major regions of the state, with the exception of the Bay Area, oppose SB 1.

SB 1 increases gas taxes and vehicle registration fees in order to raise $5.2 billion annually, or $52 billion over the next decade, for road repairs and maintenance and other transportation-related projects. Starting in November, the tax on gas will increase 12 cents from 18 cents per gallon to 30 cents per gallon.

Taxes on diesel will increase even more. The excise tax on diesel will go up 20 cents from 16 cents a gallon to 36 cents per gallon, and the diesel sales tax will rise from 1.75 percent to 5.75 percent.

The legislation also creates a new vehicle registration fee ranging from $25 a year to $175 annually.

Last month, Assemblyman Travis Allen (R-Huntington Beach) filed an initiative calling for the repeal of SB 1. Allen is striving to place the initiative on the Nov. 2018 ballot. Backers of his initiative have 150 days to gather 365,880 signatures from registered California voters.

Although California voters overwhelmingly oppose the gas tax hike, they remain supportive of Governor Jerry Brown, according to the IGS poll. Brown’s job approval remains high at 59 percent. Only 41 percent of voters disapprove of Brown. Voter approval of the Legislature is declining, though.

When a government body taxes the means that enables the tax payer to get to work so he or she can earn the money to give it to said government the government is hurting it’s own chances of getting the tax dollars they so desperately are seeking in the first place.

I think Sigmund Freud would call that masochistic and somewhat schizophrenic. Maybe that is why they call him Governor Moonbeam.

Either tax gasoline or tax income taxing both is ridiculous and self depleting.

No, Gov Brown was called that cause He wanted to put a satellite in orbit, so people could see the votes in the State Legislature, now the State Legislature is on TV, and those signals are bounced off of a satellite or two.

Yeah I’m old enough to know that.

58%? I bet it’s more like 80%. You can’t trust polls anymore. Everything including pollsters have been corrupted. The only poll that counts will be taken at the voting booth when this stupid tax bill is challenged. Bring pensions back down to something resembling common sense, cut spending over all and then a tax increase will be easier to accept. Until the state does that, they will be ruling against the majority.

Polls use landlines, who are mainly populated by older people.

I have a cell phone, I’ve never been polled, so the poll is BS.

More like, “Nancy Pelosi, Jerry Brown and more than likely our next governor, Gavin Newsom, three people who don’t have to worry about paying the increased taxes” along with all politicians

Nancy Pelosi is not part of State government, She’s better than that pathological liar, named tRump, He and Rep Paul Ryan(R-WI01) want your healthcare and your Social Security checks.

Check out the local Central Coast Taxpayers Association (CCTA) website. I am sure this organization will be ‘all over’ the Repeal the Gas Tax effort!

NO ON THE GAS TAX!

When Pigs fly, California is a DEEP Blue State, get used to that.

The Bay Area approves.

Home of Nancy Pelosi, Jerry Brown and more than likely our next governor, Gavin Newsom. Who’s surprised?

Lord help us!

Between the Bay Area and LA County, Republicans can’t get elected to offices higher than the CA State Legislature, Independents and Democrats vote Democratic, not Republican.

The ruling class in California will never cease to increase taxes. The voting majority in California consists to three groups, those who work for the government, those who are supported by the government and a small group of zealots who love everything government. Because of this California will continue to increase taxes at all levels until there is only tax. It will take some time but the collapse will happen.

And you are the smallest group in CA, Republicans, any smaller and you’d be extinct, most of whom are filling up Cemeteries at a fast rate.

This is a Deep Blue State, Republicans get elected to be Gov?

Don’t make Me laugh, Gov Brown beat both comers, in 2010 Meg Whitman spent $100 Mn of Her own money, Brown spent $10 Mn, He won, then in 2014 Brown beat that toy train guy for good measure…
