Addis, a leader of the Women’s March San Luis Obispo, was recently a victim in a court case in which a man was convicted of making criminal threats for sending threatening Facebook messages to the local activist group. Another criminal case could now arise over the emails sent to Addis and other council members.

On Wednesday, Addis read a written statement from behind the dais at the Morro Bay council meeting. Addis, who was elected to the council last November, said, 33 days after taking office, “misogynistic assaults” began appearing in her inbox.

During her prepared statement, Addis read some of the email messages she received.

“You have got to be one of the most vile, despicable, hypocritical [c-words] I have ever had the pleasure of seeing,” one of the emails said, according to Addis’s statement. “You put yourself out as a member of the women’s movement and march, and are probably a member of the ‘me too’ movement as well.”

Addis said the message also contained a photo of her along with a photo of a Nazi flag.

The councilwoman said she shared the email with a colleague who contacted the individual who wrote the message. That prompted a follow-up email from the man in which he called her a coward.

“You don’t have the ovaries to respond to me directly,” the man allegedly wrote.

Addis said she alerted authorities and asked the man directly to stop. He then sent an email with his photo demanding Addis change her stance on city policy, the councilwoman said.

“So, you would like me to stop the personal attacks against you. Well I would like you to [change your position on a city policy]… If you agree to this, I will agree to stop any personal attacks… you need to grow a pair and put on your big girl pants… calling law enforcement… is so weak and childish of you,” the email read, according to Addis’s statement.

Addis said she later learned the man had been posting about her for months, making comments like, “She is nothing but a crotch taco,” and “She appears to be an attractive woman. Maybe she can get a job as a pole dancer.”

At Wednesday’s meeting, Addis said she was shocked by the gender-based aggression directed at her.

“When women and other victims speak truth we amplify out power,” Addis said. “Silence and fear do not help us and do not help those who will face abuse after us.”

Other council members, including Mayor John Headding, joined Addis in condemning the emails they received. Heading said, albeit not sexist, the emails he received crossed the line from passion to aggression and were full of vulgarity and hate.

The Tribune reports Morro Bay police have identified Mark Charles Hanson, 65, as the man who sent the emails. Hanson told the Tribune the emails express the disdain he and others have for Morro Bay council members who are not listening to their constituents about plans for the controversial new wastewater treatment plant.

Hanson said trying to be civil and to negotiate with the council members does not work. He said he is trying to get them to wake up someday.

The Morro Bay resident said he stopped sending emails to council members after a police sergeant spoke with him about the matter. But, Hanson said he would continue commenting on social media.

Morro Bay police conducted an investigation into the case, compiled a report and recommended that the SLO County District Attorney’s Office file misdemeanor annoying or harassing communication charges, according to the Tribune article. The DA’s office is currently reviewing the case.

This sort of behind the scenes criticism has always been there. Ask any mayor or council person and there’s a good chance they’ve had this happen to them as well.

Normally they suffer in silence, never letting the public know about it.

But Dawn Addis is a political activist who has made her reputation through confrontation politics, and probably couldn’t keep it to herself if she wanted to.

Hansen is a fool if he thinks his attack dog emails will have any effect on Addis or any of this council’s members.

If he wants to change things, then pull papers and stand election. Anything else is doomed to failure.

Don’t you know it’s only a problem when they do it to us, when we do it to the other side that’s not a problem…..

Charlie Boy deserves to be chained between the back porch and woodshed, with a self-choke collar.

The police recommended harassment charges? If that is harrassment what Aaron Ochs does to Karen for Adam Hill is felonious. Get off the toilet, Dan Dow.

It’s not criminal harassment. The police chief is a coward because the chief is hired by the city council. Dow won’t do anything because it’s protected free speech, albeit odious. Unless they can find a specific criminal threat. Vulgarity does not constitute a threat.

Wasn’t this one of the people at the pre election pot party in San Luis last year.

Rukidding?

Couple of things…I live in Morro Bay and one thing I “want” is for people to treat each other with basic human respect regardless of political ideology. You don’t like Adam Hill so that justifies repeatedly sending vulgar emails and making threats? Just “grow some thicker skin”.

Of course if Mrs. Addis represented YOUR political views you would be running around the internet with your hair on fire…

Your name wouldn’t happen to be Mark Charles Hanson would it?

No I’m not Mark Hanson. I’m speaking from personal experience and just trying to help her get initiated to SLO politics. It takes tough skin to sit and listen to people attack you and whatever and unlike Adam Hill keep your mouth shut and absorb it. It’s a tough arena and if you are going to be controversial prepare yourself for the onslaught. I don’t approve of the vulgarity etc. but you be criticized at times and that’s part of the game. Like it was said one time, if it’s too hot in the kitchen get out. I don’t know the lady or what she stands for just giving a little advice.

Welcome to the club of politics. It’s a very very dirty business that you have just got yourself into. Now is the time to grow some thicker skin because it appears you have become a political item. Just do some homework and see how Adam Hill has acted, with no repercussions, and you can see why some people act the way they do. I might suggest that you put the power trip aside and concentrate on what the people of Morro Bay want.

Dawn may not be my cup of tea politically but people come on….grow up….stop with the angry emails…stop with the grammar school tactics…If it was this Mark Charles Hanson person he is a coward…we must as American except the results of the elections…if you don’t like the way they turn out then work to change minds…do not threaten or you will find yourself all alone on an island of shame and misery…

Interesting. I wonder what else there is to the story. I wonder what city ordinance the suspect is referring to. A large percentage of so called hate crimes are hoaxes. It’s easily done and in the times we live in can be highly effective in bolstering your group. I’m not saying this is but I bet there’s more going on. A boomer acting so aggressively like this is unusual and the verbage is so awkwardly cut and pasted, “I bet you are part of the me too movement”, and a boomer posting a nazi flag, hmmm. The effect will only be to embolden the feminist group the woman belongs too. Just putting it out there, everything about this is unusual.
