California lost more than 100,000 residents over the last fiscal year, marking two consecutive years of population decline in the Golden State. [KTLA]

The state has a population of 39,029,342, as of July 2022. California’s population decreased by more than 113,000 residents between July 2021 and July 2022. It declined by more than 500,000 residents between July 2020 and July 2022.

It is hard for me to understand why regulars on this comments section complain the loudest and most constantly about how terrible California is and yet choose to stick around. If so many places are better, such as the “red” states, for instance, why stay here and constantly complain?

Is it possibly because California has the 5th largest economy in the world and now poised to become the 4th very soon? Is it because of our level of education, social services, economic opportunities, protected environments, social and scientific innovations which spread to the whole country, availability of healthy food, guarantee of personal freedoms, health care etc., etc.? Silly me, I’m very proud of all that.

If you actually think this state sucks so heavily, why stay? If you really believe personal opportunity or better housing, better security, standard of living, etc., etc., sensible government, etc., is elsewhere, why are you here? Perhaps instead of winging constantly about how displeased you are, you should spend less time and energy attempting to bring us down and relocate to those you perceive as greener pastures?

Asking for a friend………

Level of education?! You’re being sarcastic right?

I consider that a relative thing. Sure, when I was going to school in California, we were #1, but I had come from Louisianna, which was 3rd from the bottom. It was a massive relief to have the better schools and I was able to thrive. I realize our standards are not what they were then, but it wasn’t the liberals who wanted to instate prop 13 and let education take the hit. If those who are constantly battering Cali for being “woke” or liberal went to a red state, they would still experience a precipitous decline in their education. But if that is what one considers an “improvement”, that is obviously where they belong.

It is very simple many many people have invested heavily in this state be it with houses of businesses. That’s when the state used to have its act together now it has nothing going for it but everybody has invested so heavily including him in their own family here. If you move the state of California 200 miles inland it would come in 51st out of the top 50 states for economy. It is only the geography that gives California any attraction at all. People keep believing that the state has something going for it it’s geography stupid

Some folks default emotional state is unhappiness, whether due to remembered experiences, diet, underlying health or ? But I agree with you, they should move and leave a place that makes them feel miserable, angry, frustrated, resentful.

They could live at the Oregon Washington border. Washington has no state income tax and Oregon has no sales tax.

Doesn’t take genius guys the people who pay tax’s are getting ripped off the people who come in illegally get paid cash pay no tax’s government subsides them so the tax payer is leaving while illegals coming in. Pretty soon will be complete Socialist state.

Wonder what the statistics would show if indexed,Taxpayers vs Taxtakers!!!

Those are just the numbers of net loss, not whom we are losing:)

1) Our state income tax rates are too high relative to other states. So why not move if your state income tax is halved or less? 2) We have too many “feel good” nitwit state laws. The legislature ought to set a target to eliminate or trim say 50 laws a year that are unnecessary, out of date. 3) We ought to consolidate governing entities. 4) We have monstrously overcompensated public sector executives. Summary, we are over taxed and over governed.

After writing my first comment, I read the next story about the new laws passing in California. I rest my case

It does not take a genius to figure out what’s coming in and what’s out. What is going out are the dollars and the people who support the state of California. What’s coming in other people who are needing more support from the state of California but there’s going to be nobody around to contribute to that.. the only thing the politicians care about is that whoever comes in will vote for them. And that means their future is secure as they try to straighten up the mess they create in this state

How do you come to this conclusion? Is it a bias?

You call it bias I call it statistics and demographics that are gathered from all the people leaving the state versus the people coming into the state. Leave emotions out and just look at facts

Do you have links? What I see are people cashing in their Calif home equity, often retiring to a low cost area. As for those migrating to California, they want to work or get an education.

This is great if it means the demand for housing decreases and home prices actually decrease. However, I doubt that will be the case for the long term.

2 to 3 percent of our housing has been converted to lodging guest rooms as “Vacation Rentals”.

Unfortunately, it’s the people with jobs that are leaving.

But mysteriously the number of people living in California keeps increasing…
