San Luis Obispo High School officials learned last October that their head basketball coach, who also taught history, allegedly sent inappropriate texts to an underage student and commented to her about breasts and buttocks during class, but waited until March to place him on leave.

This action permitted 39-year-old Jeff Brandow to remain coach of the varsity basketball team, which he guided to the league championship. The league then named him Coach of the Year.

Over the past five years, Brandow has allegedly harassed multiple females including underage students, coaches, his students’ mothers, sports reporters and community members, multiple sources said.

In 2018, Matt Cross opened The Broad Street Public House, a popular neighborhood pub that replaced an existing bar Brandow frequented. After Brandow slapped a bartender’s buttocks while attempting to get her to go to a massage parlor with him, Cross said he threw Brandow out of the pub.

Brandow eventually came back, began bragging about snorting cocaine and his sexual prowess while harassing both female customers and staff, Cross said. This time, Cross permanently barred him from the establishment and placed his picture behind the bar with a warning for new bartenders.

“He goes after women who are not interested in him,” Cross said. “I am so glad someone is finally exposing this sexual predator.”

Brandow, however, claims he was never banned from Cross’ establishment.

“I did not get banned,” Brandow said during a short interview Tuesday afternoon. “It was a complete misunderstanding.”

It was during that time that a KSBY sports reporter was granted a restraining order against Brandow, who she said was obsessed with her.

In a letter submitted to the court, Brandow offers the KSBY reporter $1,000 to talk to him, $10,000 to go on one to two dates and $20,000 for “all in.” Brandow included a $10,000 check he wrote from an account he shares with his wife.

Shortly afterwards, the reporter left SLO County, KSBY and journalism.

During the next few years as campus athletic director, Brandow allegedly made inappropriate advances at women he had power over. He allegedly told a female trainer hired to work with the basketball team she would not get her stipend unless she agreed to go on a date with him.

In addition, a former female coach who worked under Brandow said he repeatedly sent her inappropriate texts asking her to meet him at bars in the middle of the night and commenting on her looks. The married mother, who had students at the school, eventually lost her coaching position, she said.

In 2019, Brandow stepped down as athletic director and basketball coach. But he continued teaching history to high school students.

However, in Feb. 2020, with a 14-13 record and three games remaining, school administrators brought Brandow back as head varsity basketball coach to finish the season.

In Oct. 2022, a group of students attended a party where one underage student allegedly shared inappropriate texts Brandow had sent her, according to several sources. Shortly afterwards, SLO High School administrators learned of the texts and of comments Brandow made to the student in the classroom regarding “tits and ass.”

Brandow was placed on leave in March, after the end of basketball season. Regarding the multiple allegations of misconduct, Brandow said he and the KSBY reporter were “dear friends,” and that “the other allegations are untrue.”

Hmmmm. What does it take to remove someone with a consistently “objectionable” track record? Especially in the era of “me too”? Is that era trumped by administration and teacher’s unions? Who represents the students, parents… and others? Is this an HR fear of lawsuit? What happened to simply firing someone… because… you can? This is a prime example of why public employee unions, all of them, should be illegal. They work for us. We pay them. But apparently, that’s where our rights end. Solution: Stop voting for supporting “feel-good” failure. Starting with the Department of Education. This is nuts.

So, public employees have zero right to organize? I wonder where that’s written in the Constitution. Americans absolutely have the right to organize, no matter who pays them.

I wonder who pays the oil field workers, the Walmart workers, the Starbucks workers? You do.

What, you’re going to quibble over teacher pay. Really? They are overpaid and unduly protected? Show me.

Your logic is daft.

Everything he’s done is labeled as “allegedly” so doubt there is really any criminal case against him. Jessica Vo is long gone and the other accusations seem to be hearsay. Guessing he and the district have permanently parted ways by now and hopefully any school that seeks to hire him will do its due diligence and reveal these serious red flags.

I seriously doubt that the district continued to employ him because of his coaching. His team was in the weaker of two Central Coast leagues. His teams beat Santa Maria, Orcutt Academy, Templeton, Santa Ynez and Nipomo, not exactly high school basketball powerhouses. They lost by 14 points to Porterville in the first round of the playoffs. His team ranked 461 among California schools according to Maxpreps. Pretty sure the super was never aware of him. That’s obviously bad management.

Moreover, CTA has thousands of teachers and it is not their responsibility to police them. The school district is solely responsible for this man to continue as their employee. To blame the union is simply right-wing ax grinding.

My first impression was formed with the alleged perp at the back to school night for athletes in which he addressed the parents of athletes in a 5 minute welcome speech after he was hired. I remember sitting in the bleachers thinking “what an arrogant little prick”.

How could people that worked with him day in and day out not have sees red flags? Unfortunately I think we are at the tip of a big iceberg.

Did you speak to an administrator or anyone about your concerns? Sounds like your instincts were right. Speak up in the future.

I thought he was an arrogant jerk, had no idea of his intentions toward women.

The SLO Coastal Superintendent, Dr. Eric Prater, needs to be fired ASAP, he can be let go FOR CAUSE, no additional payout.

Protect our students, don’t allow them to be victims.

So a bar owner doesn’t want him around his employees or customers.

A KSBY reporter gets a restraining order and leaves town to get away from him.

But SLO High allows him to be around children. Could they really be that unaware?

You can thank the teachers union which makes its next to impossible to fire bad teachers. I don’t want to hear another story about poor teachers pay until the union allows for quick termination of bad teachers.

So seriously how is the school supposed to be aware of him being banned from a bar? Are school administrators supposed to hang around local bars to get the gossip on who has been 86’ed? And even then, it’s hearsay that hardly meets any sort of legal standard.

The superintendent should be fired immediately. Knowingly allowing a sexual predator to remain in a public school is despicable. Highest compensated educator in our county, highest expectations of doing the job correctly. Winning a game at the expense of victimizing minors is not correct.

Sociopath 101

Brandow apparently just wanted the women to watch him dribble.

Sexual harassment and assault should never be treated as a joke which your comment does. I’m guessing you are trying to be funny but please be more aware.

I obviously do not know all the details about this story, and there is always more to the story, but on the surface it appears SLO High stooped to a new low to win their basketball season. Hopefully this predator receives a long overdue and appropriate punishment (jail time) and is never allowed to teach any age.
