Doom and gloom at the seawall in Cayucos

Dell Franklin walking his dog on the beach

By DELL FRANKLIN

Editor’s Note: The following series, “Life in Radically Gentrifying Cayucos by the Sea,” to be posted biweekly includes the notes, thoughts, and opinions of an original American voice: author Dell Franklin.

Franklin’s memoir, “The ballplayer’s Son” is currently on Amazon.

This one hurt. As a person from high school on who felt involved in politics, much of my ego and idealism has been tied up in whomever I believed in and voted for. Over the years, you win a few and lose a few, and usually know who is going to win because you feel the tide of momentum. So, I was pretty sure Trump was going to win this one, and it was only a matter of how big.

Well, it was a demolition of not only the Democratic Party and their beliefs, but mine as well. A brutal loss.

As an athlete who played all three major American sports at a respectable level and has been characterized by my peers as a “psycho competitor,” I feel like a loser on the losing side. A member of the team of losers, feeling squelched and pretty much demoralized and finished—at least for some time. And maybe I’m liable and weak like my team and suffer from a dose of self-delusion about some of the nonsense they believe in.

Feeling and hoping it had to be a miracle for Harris to win, I refused to watch the news on election night, dreading the situation. In the morning when I read the doom and gloom emails from my cousin and a couple friends and my sister, I quickly escaped to the Cayucos seawall, where fellow so-called wimpy woke coastal elites congregated, and nobody was happy, some were in shock, and nobody could find their sense of humor, which illuminated just how deep the misery was.

Later on I found some, advising my cohorts to get on You Tube and dig up some George Carlin shows, especially the one on “a life worth losing.” George saw it all, claiming “they’re gonna come after your social security, and you know what, they’re gonna get it, so they can give it to their rich friends.”

Well, maybe not. But my conclusion, having been around for over 80 years, is that human beings are a flawed, troubled, sometimes tortured lot, almost all of us psychologically fouled up, either from the stress of our environments or the way we’ve been raised, and so the ongoing political scene is going to always be a chaotic mess, but somehow hopefully manageable.

But now?

Some of us talked about leaving the country. Nah, not at this point, and probably never because I live in paradise, and I like a good fight. Sometimes you’ve got to look in the mirror, take stock, be honest about yourself, regroup, stick around and slug it out, and admit that this time the orange messiah and his tribe went to war both verbally and viciously, while the dems and libs, as usual, conducted themselves like fair-minded pansies.

It’s a dirty, filthy, nasty, demagogic, underhanded game. Politics is war, winning at all costs, any way possible, and there’s no referees, dummies. And today, it is a more virulent war than ever before, with the ammunition to make it really ugly and hideous.

So, here’s to the team that knows how to win.

“We are a team that got the shit kicked out of us,” I told one of one of my fellow coastal elites, a former all American college athlete and Boston Red Sox zealot who loathes the New York Yankees. He nodded glumly.

A couple members of a book club I belong were there, and they could not talk about it. Only the dogs didn’t feel the pain, the panic, the despair, and fear of the future.

They snapped up their treats and wagged their tales and begged for more, failing to notice the forlorn expressions and slumped shoulders surrounding them.

Some of the wimpy woke coastal elites expressed commentary, like this: “What do you expect? You think the other half of the country is going to vote for a half black, half Indian woman who’s from Cali-for-nee-ah?”

“What a bunch of dummies.”

George Carlin would agree.

And: “We’re a racist country.”

Well, here’s my take: When Russia tried to become a democracy, it didn’t work, because they were too used to centuries of authoritarian regimes, for taking orders, falling in line, etc, and never could adjust and went straight back to a despot within ten years.

We are grounded and indoctrinated to freedom and democracy and being able to say and do what we damn well please, and it’s going to take some kind of monstrous stuff to cow the fire in the hearts of the beast within us, by which I mean all of us.

So stay tuned, it’s going to be interesting and perhaps gory.

At least Trump isn’t Biden, and I’m ok with 4 years with a rapist knowing there’s green grass beyond that. Court hopefully catches up with him like Rudy, and so many more, and Epstein, and P Diddy. Trump is literally a walking coffin in age. Aside from his Meth prescriptions and constant nose clearing, the guy is a couple years away from old age death. Same with Biden, and thank goodness. Gotta get these old farts out of Gov. All of them, locally too. Put them in old folks homes, report them for being senile. It’s called mandated reporting.

You shouldn’t be typing the sentence “I’m ok with a rapist” No matter what else is going on, our leaders should have a moral compass.

What’s with, “democracy, democracy, democracy”?

Why do so many people, including the President elect, say ‘America is a democracy’, or ‘protect our democracy’? Exactly which founder said, “It’s a democracy if you can keep it”? That’s right, none of them.

We are a nation that is for the individual – period. We are not for the mob, not for the “elite”, not for the talking heads.

We should celebrate the fact that we have a Constitution that is meant to limit the powers of the government, specifically overreaching tentacles of the federal government. The intention of our constitution wasn’t to give or limit the freedoms of its citizens.

A democracy is a socialist structure that has proven time and again to fail.

America is a constitutional Republic. Constitutional Republic. Constitutional Republic. Constitutional Republic.

BTW: Can America sue those that use the wrong nouns?

Now, please explain to people here the meaning of fascism

Democrats lost the moment that they appointed a candidate who had not received a single primary vote.

Agreed. And ignored the Hero, Bernie. Let us Dems eat cake. No sane Dem wanted Kamala or Biden, ever. Or any status quo psycho.

I was looking at a picture of the electoral map, wow! The Dems got shellacked!

Time to regroup

My sentiments exactly, Dell. But, I’m of the opinion that Trump’s second term will be much like his first. Plenty of smoke, some collateral damage to migrants, minorities, women and the environment, but very little else will get done. The only reason the big billionaires backed him is for another tax cut, which they will get. He will immediately tell the Justice Dept. to stop any investigations of him, and will open plenty of investigations against his opponents, but I doubt these will go anywhere, simply because his opponents are not law breakers like him. I just pray that another pandemic or 9-11 type situation doesn’t happen under him, because he would handle it poorly, as he did the pandemic. He inherits a decent economy which won’t get much better under him. Hell, he may even die before his term is up, and J.D. Vance is already one of the most unpopular VP’s since Dick Cheney. Things will look better for the Dems in four years.

Agreed Adam. And this sentiment gives me hope towards a brighter future. Probably have another deficit due to tax cuts for the rich, corruption etc like the Bush stolen election of 2000 when Jeb forced Florida to hide votes. This is his last term. And Elon will get called out as Trump will hopefully for their Epstein ties and Pedophile rings. Elons brother and Elon have ties to Epstein and Amber Hurd. Maybe Puff Diddler has ties to them too. Hopefully, doubtful, justice will prevail. Including Clinton and Gates. 4 more years and we’re done of Rich folks perhaps.

Maybe Dems should finally realize Bernie was the guy. Maybe AOC for president, I don’t think America is evolved enough for a female president; our ethics aren’t as evolved as Europe. Too many misogynist and Misandrist people.

And Trump is as old as Biden, and like Roosevelt, is a crippled prop. He’s an old, old man. And a convicted Rapist and Convicted criminal.

For someone that has a column about the gentrification of Cayucos, you seem to have missed the fact that the biggest surge in that gentrification occurred in the past 4 years, under the current administration, after they started printing money in early 2021, which sent asset inflation soaring. Some of the biggest beneficiaries were Bay Area tech workers, many of whom flocked to the SLO coast to buy beach houses after even many of them were priced out of Carmel, Monterrey Bodega Bay and other Northern California coastal cities. During the orange messiah’s first term, SLO county real estate was relatively affordable compared to today.

We elected Barack Obama overwhelmingly, and twice at that. We’re far from a racist country.

Dell, you’re welcome to join us anytime, my man. Put down the Washington Post and the Tribune, turn off MSNBC, and you’ll start to see what your fellow Democrats are starting to see

I don’t see reparations for Natives or Blacks or any ethnic slaves, yet. So racist, sexist, absolutely. Book banning, etc. not a good look. And Dell isn’t attempting to overthrow an election or kill a VP or deny Trump for 4 years; and he won’t, because he isn’t Insane and is college educated.

Man… its going to be okay…. first order of business… stop the freak out and educate yourself on why this happened and find a way to work with your opposition not against them all the time….

I don’t see Dell Storming the Capitol, or talking about Bush did Loose to Gore and stole that election, or even refusing Trump won. I see nothing wrong. I don’t see Dell committing acts of Terrorism attempting to overthrow an election whilst killing police and attempting to hang the VP.

And Carlin is missed, very missed, and we shouldn’t and won’t forget him.

Don’t cast stones in a glass house some say.

None of what you said is true… but what you said is why you lost the election… so by all means… keep saying it….

People can say the sky is purple, but it doesn’t mean it is. Some facts rub some wrong.

What isn’t true? Did j6 happen? Did Florida steal Gores election with Jeb? Or are facts not facts; as in gravity isn’t real? I’m pretty sure the Sun is a star not a planet and there is life beyond earth, and it has nothing to do with Jesus?

Were there weapons off mass destruction in Iraq? Was Saddam US educated and an ally of America then Dick Cheney and Rex T and others who are oil lobbyists like Ghadaffi who said no thanks; get called terrorists? Did the Saudies who love Trump and Hate Israel kill journalists and women? So? Where do you stand? Idk, peer reviewed journals are easy to find, you won’t find them on Television, that’s for sure.

CCN viewers need to drop cable and read peer reviewed journals, or Wikipedia .

Mr. Franklin:

I grew up here, I’m 18+ years in the CAARNG with three deployments under my belt, including one to Afghanistan. I’m university-educated. I have a daughter. She’s university-educated also. We both voted enthusiastically for Donald Trump. We’re not racist. We’re not Nazis. We’re not garbage. We’re Americans who happen to think differently than you. And on November 5th, we handed you your ass. Deal with it.

I should add, her Mom, not just university-educated but in fact an educator, also went for Trump. This was a historic realignment of the American political landscape.

Some women in America are so abused, they endorse their abuser. Some women who are victims of sexual assault and bad marriages stay with their perpetrator because they know nothing else.

Some universities encourage DoD corruption, and endorsements. People say universities are woke. Woke is a word to describe anyone with radical ideas.

He still has his buttox I believe. Some people are ok with voting for convicted rapists, that’s their right as a father who has a daughter.

Laughlines, The most cogent portion of your response is your ending remark about the realignment of the American political landscape. And while I wholeheartedly agree with most of what Dell writes, there is a consolation for those on the losing side and a word of caution to the winning side. Quite simply, we have all been here before: McCarthyism after the liberalism of FDR, Nixon after the liberalism of Kennedy, the liberalism because of the Vietnam War after Nixon’s demise and more currently the liberalism of Biden and Harris after Trump’s first term. So we have all been here before, and rest assuredly there will be liberalism after Trump. Many of us in this election didn’t like history repeating itself. But be either consoled or cautioned because it will happen again…if we still have democracy after the reign of King Trump!!!

Kevin, Sorry for the reply. I am new to posting on CCN and incorrectly posted under you instead of Laughlines. I have now posted this as a response to his post.

I’m willing to have a good, honest discussion. Not interested in responding to the tired, shopworn ad hominems some others are throwing out. Although I’m delighted to see them doubling down on the exact sort of arrogant condescension which landed them in their current predicament, as they seem determined not to learn lessons or adapt. You’re correct in stating that our politics is cyclical, generally your historical analysis is accurate. But there’s something else happening here. Since the George H.W. Bush administration, and especially since Clinton, the credentialed class has led the nation astray. Admitting the PRC into the WTO, and shipping not just jobs but actual factories over there. The “Peace Dividend” and the evisceration of our military just before the Forever Wars. Largely unrestricted immigration. The World is Flat, the End of History, etc. The hysterical overreaction to COVID-19 which also resulted in the biggest transfer of wealth upward in history. And all the while, anyone who raised concerns or questioned was castigated, pilloried, ridiculed, and shunned by the ones who were profiting most handsomely. Finally the everyman and everywoman has had enough. When you can analyze the arrogance of those “Harris, obviously” signs, you might start to get it. I think it’s bigger, more foundational, than your examples. I hope and pray that the Days of Davos are ending. I think it’ll be OK. Peace.
