This week’s dumbest criminal

This week’s dumbest criminal award goes to two men who decided to shoplift from a store during a Wednesday afternoon shop with a cop charity event because they thought the officers would be too distracted to notice. [SeattleWeekly]

Shane Alexander, 20, and Jason Vantress, 30, selected a Fred Meyer store in Portland  for an afternoon of shoplifting. The pair arrived to find the store was the location of a shop with a cop event.

The Portland Police department sponsors the yearly event to provide disadvantaged children with new school clothes. Nearly 60 officers including commanders, beat cops and a few canine officers attended the popular event.

Alexander and Vantress deduced that the officers would be too busy shopping with the children to notice a few shoplifters. So they began stuffing items such as blenders, tools and clothes into their backpacks.

A clerk spotted the pairs illicit activity and had no problem finding an officer to arrest the alleged shoplifters.

I like a good story as much as anyone, but i’d like to know how it was determined what these guys “thought”. Are they that stupid that they confessed.
