OccupyCalPoly moves on SLO county courthouse

October 18, 2011

Members of a local spinoff of the “Occupy Wall Street” protest movement plan to set up camp indefinitely outside the San Luis Obispo County courthouse starting Wednesday.

The announcement was posted on the Facebook page for “OccupyCalPoly.”

“We will be starting occupation tomorrow at 5 at the courthouse, a number of us are prepared to stick it out. We are bringing tents, sleeping bags, food and more. If anyone has any supplies that could help support, or if anyone lives near downtown and could provide kitchen/washroom facilities, please step forward with the three who have already offered. Please come out and show your support. Solidarity!”

The efforts of the Cal Poly group echo protests recently organized by “OccupySLO” which held a demonstration last weekend in Mitchell Park that drew several hundred people. These local protests, in turn, stem from “Occupy Wall Street,” which began in New York on Sept. 17 and has since gain worldwide attention.

Here is some good info on the goals of this movement. Most of these cannot be denied as worthy of everyone’s support (other than crooked politicians and the ultra greedy rich). Even the hotly debated last one is put forth strongly.

Thoughtful list, hotdog. Thank you. That’s the closet I’ve come to seeing the goals of OWS articulated.

My concern, as I read these posts, is that the same old partisan comments, some even recommending violent actions, appear. If it’s a 99% movement, the partisanship disables that. An invitation to appear at the Courthouse for discussion is not worded very invitingly. Blaming one party over another is counterproductive. Almost every rep from the Prez on down are responsible for what we have. I appreciate the time and energy many are expending for this cause, but it should include all who wish to be a part of the movement without fear of insults because of party affliation. Just my 2 cents….

Thank you! Finally something concrete as to the goals.

Some comments about those 10 goals:

1. Corporations and unions should be held to the same campaign financing criteria. No advantage to either.

2. Yep

3. 8 & 18. 8 years total as president, 18 years total in congress.

4. Agreed. We are broke. Bring ALL of our troops home worldwide. We need to focus on being the world’s businessmen rather than the world’s policemen.

5. Nope. Job creation should be a function of the private sector.

6. Nope. Government screws up most everything they touch. I don’t want health care any more screwed up than what it is already.

7. Original intent at the time of passage of each amendment.

8. See #7

9. Federal guidelines, state implementation.

10. Let him without sin cast the first stone.

Thanks

I’m 100% in favor of it. Very often the only road to positive change is for pissed off young people to hit the streets and start burning stuff.

I also love how bloated, pink faced, fat fingered baby boomers who created this mess and have no clue how to fix it chastise these kids for a “lack of cohesion”. Jesus wept.

Burning stuff? A felony. Please leave our town.

Good call.

I’m not surprised.

I just love these ‘spontaneous’ gatherings! Although one does wonder who has been footing the bill and paying for all this stuff? In the 60’s folks would go to these gatherings in search of a ‘date’ for the evening… but the folks coming around are looking a bit tired.

In an interesting study by the Pew Research Group… they discovered an interesting finding about the ‘Occupy’ this or that… nobody but the media really cares.

I guess it’s safe to ‘occupy’ the court house… I mean… who really goes there?

Well, you’ve certainly earned your ‘troll’ credentials lately. This post might even alarm trolls though, it is so out of touch, wrong and full of childish armchair idiocy that even some of our other ‘head in the sand’ lame brains might wince at it.

Here is the truth (probably of little interest to the likes of you). Our occupyslo creation was spontaneous and the first action happened after 16 hours of planning (8 of that sleeping time). It was a wild success.

No one is footing our bill like other ‘uprisings’ were funded by huge corporate interests.

Unlike you many of us demonstrated in the 60s to better the world, without the slightest self interest.

If you wish to use the Cheney/bushie/limbaugh/eichmann tactic of repeating lies over and over until some dupes will believe your rubbish you have that right. But for those reading these posts realize what is what. All those assertions are lies, inspired by the 1% to confuse and divide the 99%. We have many sincere but misinformed folks spewing out the ‘party’ line and also plenty of spies, provocateurs and other slime that will stop at nothing to damage this popular uprising to achieve a real democracy.

Why don’t you nay-sayers come down to an event and chat? Are you afraid of the truth? I hear the next big event is Saturday at noon, at the courthouse. Come down and speak your mind, and try to open it up a bit.

I hope the students tear up the lawn and plant another community garden, complete with rainwater harvesting, a greywater system, a kitchen, compost & recycling. Go POLY!

Well, maybe they’re at the courthouse because Crandell booted them from DeVaul’s place?

You sound so bitter . As a forty-plus year registered conservative republican , I suggest that you need to stop watching Fox News that talks you what to think . Google George Will or other thoughtful intelligent conservatives . The only problem is they will give you real facts and make you think .

Thoughtful conservatives are as rare as queer tomcats round these parts .

Rare, indeed! Fortunately, Congalton was able to snag one for his show last week: David Holmes. It made for a very good discussion.

Thank you

Roger speaks the truth.

Sad, the confused and angry dupes of limbag and beck will use childish rhetoric to denigrate those who stand up for something in a positive way. You hide at your sad little desk sending out bull since your masters tell you to do that. No one is driving this movement but a sincere hope for democratic change to benefit the 99% that probably includes most of the nay sayers as well

So someone who would like a future that offers hope is deserving of your infantile wrath. Folks like you will ooze to the surface throughout the campaign, we know that.

What you and others who can’t stand to see any progress might do is go down there and talk to the occupyers and have an honest dialog about the issues. And Dave Congalton (am 920) is running a series of shows where self proclaimed experts on both sides of the issue are discussing it. Perhaps, on reflection, rOy was one of the callers yesterday-there were some real winners! Rational thought was tossed out the window before they dialed the number.

I was surprised by the stupidity of some of the callers yesterday.

So was I.

I know what your saying,,very funny, I detect a bit of sarcasm.

I didn’t call in to Dave’s show, must have been someone actually named Roy!

(r0y isn’t my real name, just as I’ll assume hotdog isn’t yours)

Perhaps it was ‘EvilTwinOfr0y’ ?

r0y, I’m really disappointed in you. I went to the first SLO Occupy and hope to go to more, there were hard working good people there of every type.

I have been to a couple of tea baggings, I have an open mind. I wanted to make a judgement for myself rather one made by the media. I expected more from you. BTW, I have never been homeless, I’m self employed, raising a ton of kids and trying desperately like so many others to hang on to middle class status.

Okay, go ahead and sleep on the lawn. What’s the courthouse supposed to do? If you’re mad about political money, demonstrate in front of the capitol. That’s where the laws are made and the money changes hands.

“What’s the courthouse supposed to do?”

It’s a statement. You can’t really expect people to travel to Sac. several times a week or to camp out there. I’m sure that the state capital has an Occupy movement.

pasoparent5, look at this picture I linked

Corporate (mainstream) media is pretending not to know what their message is.

The message can be summed up to one thing:

Economic Justice.

Love the link. You summed it up great. When I watch the Occupiers on Faux, they find the most crazy or out there type of people to interview to show their flock of sheeple and the people like r0y eat it up.

That’s not just the program for FauxSnooze. All the media loves a circus (as do we)

Nice cartoon, mbrooks.

The only thing missing on the placard carried by the protesters in the cartoon are signs with ‘NO NUKES’ and ‘SOCIALIZED MEDICINE’ on them.

The reason the ‘occupy’ message is unclear is because if its articulated clearly NO ONE who believes in our constitutional form of government will support it.

Like so many others you don’t know anything so I wonder why you are talking? Come to the events and talk to those on the front line defending YOU. Instead of spouting off with your politics come down to an event and talk with those you denigrate. Any of you readers can go to occupyslo.org to hook up and get more info.

Many expect this movement to be perfect in its goals, organizations, appearance, outreach and demeanor. If you slow down a sec and look at that comment you will see how silly that expectation is. The movement is made up of many diverse people with many agendas, abilities, egos, available time and so on. It is doing what it can to change the world in that the ultra rich have ever so slowly squeezed us dry, and continue to do so. They achieved and maintained their power by buying off many of us and divided us into many oppressed groups. But we are all the 99%, and many who, in some strange way, oppose us in devilish ways, are just pawns of the 1%. Those in that group will find it difficult but many will get their minds right and defect to our side in order to further their OWN best interests. Just take some time.

The same type of people said the same type of comments when the civil rights movement started. Deja vu all over again.

Unlike the Tea Party the Occupiers were started as a grass roots movement. The Occupiers didn’t have the millions of $$ from Murdoch and the Koch brothers and yet look how in one month the movement has grown, it’s global. With all the backing of the wealthiest people in the country the tea party seems to be struggling to stay relevant. Now the Occupiers will start getting the bigger donors, I can’t wait to see how it will be in 6 months.

zaphod has an excellent link to the movement . These are the people that voted no on A & B and support the local county and city government jobs and Unions . I hope the government people like the PD are patient and understanding to them . They are made up of liberals and conservatives that just want our politicians to represent people not big local money .

You think they want our politicians NOT to listen to THESE GUYS? Good luck with that.

I love that link r0y,,, finally you did something right! I know that your link was probably meant as a dig to to those of us on the left but it actually showed how screwed up they both are, or after seeing Lieberman’s contributions I should say ‘all’ sides.

I didn’t have time to look at all of them but I was interested in the campaign donations to our most talked about congressional leaders. The ones that I like the most, although not great weren’t that bad ie Frankin, Reid, Pelosi boxer, Capps and Walters. Ron Paul wasn’t too bad either. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t approve of any of these large campaign contributions by big corps but those were the lesser of the evils IMO. The worse ones were Boehner and Cantor. I’m more disgusted with Cantor than any of them. Two of his largest donors are the Koch Bros and Blue Cross, two of the most despicable organizations in this country. Kevin McCarthy is also the expected pig that I thought he was and of course Paul Ryan is what I expected. Again, there were people on the left that disappointed me ie Durbin and Frank. But they don’t come close to the ones (Cantor, Boehner, McCarthy, Ryan) that I mentioned.

The point is, we need to get that big money our of our politicians hands. The big corps own our politicians and things won’t get better until the money is out.

Will one of these “protestors” please wiggle out of their filthy sleeping bags for a moment, comb their hair and kindly explain what the #)(^*@# point of these “protests” are?

I still haven’t figured that one out myself. In following the news, I see that Michael Moore, the American nazi party, and the American communist party’s are supporting the occupiers.

Not the kind of company that I want to be associated with, so I am choosing to withhold my support.

Chris Hedges in NYC gives some insight into what it is all about.

Yeah, they are non-hierarchical? Is Hedges serious or just journalistically lazy? Maybe he’s burned out and doesn’t want to pry into it, like all the other media. All I know is they have LOTS of money and LOTS of planning. That does not say “non-hierarchical” to me. Oh, and that full-color newspaper they have now (the occupy wall street journal). Funny name, but very expensive to maintain.

I’d love for ANYONE to ask the protesters what kind of system they are hoping for once they “bring down these evil corporations” (the same corps that put both bush and obama in the white house). As it is, they just seem like tools. Useful Idiots and all that, but nobody seems to care who has been nudging them into this all along.

It is obvious you have no idea what these people are advocating . They are actually trying to help people like you . Are you drinking that Julie Tacker crazy juice too ?

These are people that want all politicians to vote for what 99% of the people want and/or need not the 1% of corporations and the super-wealthy want , which would be greed and control over the rest of us 99% . Like when dems and repubs both voted to give tax brakes to corporations to move their plants to South American countries .

There is a certain segment of the population that will never get it, they are too far gone with right wing media brain washing. You can explain until you are blue in the face but they will never even try, they just don’t have that ability. Perhaps we should pity them rather than try to waste our time trying to get them to be free thinkers.

No, there is a legitimate grievance out there.

1. the politicians and the large corporations have shipped our jobs overseas. They have profited, we have not.

2. the bankers stole our money once again, via the scandals and then the taxpayer relief, and our government has done nothing to punish them, rather they take wallstreet money.

That is legitimate.

But these protestors are so brainwashed by the media they only see half the story. They forget that Obama took wallstreet money. Obama has not prosecuted wallstreet, rather, his treasury secretary used to work for goldman sachs and will again some day. Obama gave the pharmaceutical and insurance companies a gift with Obamacare, guaranteeing them tens of millions of new customers.

Obama is part of the problem, but the protesters are so blind that they think only that the right is the problem.

(Oh, the right will take wall street money too. Romney is right now.)

So how many of the Occupy demonstraters have you spoken with? When I went a SLO Occupy there were quite a few people angry at Obama, including myself. It’s so unfortunate that the only choices we have are the lesser of the evils.

Sad, knowing so little and talking so much. There was a quote form Honest Abe I think, “Better to be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt”.

I wonder where you get your ideas. Occupy is non partisan, many there speak harshly of democrats, including the pres. But Barack did not cave to big Pharma, the repos forced that and many concessions-as they have on many issues.

Hum so you have no idea what this is about of why some are doing this yet first thing outta your mouth is 2 insults. Guess the other option is to gun them down like they would in some of the other free countries.

I hope your moniker is not indicative of your familial status. i would hate to see a child brought up in your dysfunctional home. You insult sincere and giving occupyers because of your self induced ignorance. Well done; your kids, if any, are in trouble.
