Can your doctor help you die in California?

deathpenaltyA group of cancer patients and doctors are suing the state of California, demanding that terminally ill people be allowed to obtain prescription drugs that will speed up their death if they find their suffering unbearable. [LA Times]

California law currently makes it a crime to assist another person in committing suicide. The lawsuit filed Wednesday in San Francisco County Superior Court argues that terminally ill patients who receive physician assistance in dying are not committing suicide.

“It is time for California to clarify that suffering, dying patients have the right to choose a peaceful death through aid in dying,” said Kathryn Tucker, co-counsel in the case. “Patients trapped in a dying process they find unbearable should be able to return to their physicians and ask for medication they could consume to bring about a peaceful death.”

The lawsuit states that the Legislature has not specifically prohibited assisted death, and that doing so would infringe on the liberties of patients. Shortly before the filing of the lawsuit, state lawmakers introduced a bill that would allow doctors to help speed up the process of dying.

Multiple cancer patients who are currently in remission have joined the lawsuit.

The suit also names California Attorney General Kamala Harris and San Francisco District Attorney George Gascon as defendants.

Oregon Public Health Division – 2013 DWDA Report

As of January 22, 2014, prescriptions for lethal medications were written for 122 people during 2013 under the provisions of the DWDA, compared to 116 during 2012 (Figure 1). At the time of this report, there were 71 known DWDA deaths during 2013. This corresponds to 21.9 DWDA deaths per 10,000 total deaths.1

Since the law was passed in 1997, a total of 1,173 people have had DWDA prescriptions written and 752 patients have died from ingesting medications prescribed under the DWDA.

Of the 122 patients for whom DWDA prescriptions were written during 2013, 63 (51.6%) ingested and died from the medication. Eight (8) patients with prescriptions written during the previous years (2011 and 2012) died after ingesting the medication during 2013, for a total of 71 DWDA deaths.

Twenty-eight (28) of the 122 patients who received DWDA prescriptions during 2013 did not take the medications and subsequently died of other causes.

Ingestion status is unknown for 31 patients who were prescribed DWDA medications in 2013. Seven (7) of these patients died, but follow-up questionnaires indicating ingestion status have not yet been received. For the remaining 24 patients, both death and ingestion status are pending (Figure 2).

Of the 71 DWDA deaths during 2013, most (69.0%) were aged 65 years or older; the median age was 71 years (42 years – 96 years). As in previous years, most were white (94.4%), well-educated (53.5% had a least a baccalaureate degree), and had cancer (64.8%). In 2013, fewer patients had cancer (64.8%) compared to previous years (80.4%), and more patients had chronic lower respiratory disease (9.9%), and other underlying illnesses (16.9%).

Most (97.2%) DWDA patients died at home, and most (85.7%) were enrolled in hospice care either at the time the DWDA prescription was written or at the time of death. Excluding unknown cases, most (96.7%) had some form of

Any doctor that would be connected with helping another die because of their severe pain from a terminal illness that our Hebrew God of the Christians gave them would be in the same camp as the “death panels” that our wonderful godly GOP leader, Sarah Palin, mentioned in the past.


That being said, and notwithstanding, our God of the Christians is totally against taking ones life in the manner of assisted suicide under ALL conditions!


“Do you not know that you are a temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If any man destroys the temple of God, God will destroy him, for the temple of God is holy and that is what you are.” (1 Corinthians 3:16,17) This passages states that any Christian that allows assisted suicide will be swimming in the sulfur lakes of Hell subsequent to their god given severely painful death!


“Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God and that you are not your own? For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.” (1 Corinthians 6:19,20:) Our Christian bodies are not our own, but they’re the property of our Hebrew God, therefore it is up to our God to say when we die, and not mans!


“Be not overly wicked, neither be a fool. Why should you die before your time?” (Ecclesiastes 7:17)


A true Christian will accept the severe pain in the end of life process that our God has given them with endurance because we will be rewarded with Heaven! “Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised.” (Hebrews 10:35-36)


The bottom line thinking of true Christians is that Jesus suffered upon the cross, therefore, let us suffer as well if the opportunity is there to prove our love for Him, praise!
