A felon allegedly carrying a 40 caliber handgun outran San Luis Obispo police officers, but did not manage to hide from them for long.

Around 10 a.m. Friday, the police department received a call about a man with a gun in the area of Ella and Henry streets. A witness reported seeing the suspect remove a gun from his pants and place it in a trash can.

When officers arrived, they located the suspect, whom police later identified as 28-year-old Dustin Thomas Maloney. A police department press release describes Maloney as a transient of Grover Beach and states that he has a prior felony conviction and has served time in prison.

Officers tried to contact Maloney, but he ran toward 1901 Henry Street. The officers pursued him into an apartment complex but lost sight of him.

Police then set up a perimeter around the complex. As officers searched the complex, they noticed movement inside an apartment.

Officers ordered Maloney to come out of the building. He complied, and police arrested him. Officers searched the apartment and found a semiautomatic 40 caliber handgun under a bed.

Investigators determined Maloney stole the gun earlier in the morning from a location in South County.

Officers booked Maloney in San Luis Obispo County Jail on charges of possession of a stolen firearm, being a felon in possession of a loaded firearm and resisting arrest. He remains in county jail with his bail set at $80,000.

SO will this get plea-bargained down and he’ll get off again? Three strikes???

Why isn’t anyone demanding to know HIS immigration status, hmmm?

Because he’s obviously a homegrown loser.

Just exercising his second amendment right (snark).

Good work everyone and hat’s off to the person who reported him!!

Why does a felon with a gun and a transient get bail?????

It’s California.

You might check your eyes, memory or literacy challenges. No where does the article say he is homeless.

You mean other than

“A police department press release describes Maloney as a transient of Grover Beach”.

Other than that?

Hey! Waitjustaminute! I thought there were laws against felons possessing guns. The law didn’t prevent this? Hmmmm….

We obviously need more gun laws.

But Stew Jenkins keeps on telling me these homeless people are decent Americans just trying to live a simple, honest life. There’s no reason whatsoever to fear the homeless right Stew?

You might check your eyes, memory or literacy challenges. No where does the article say he is homeless. Comma comes after ‘homeless’.

Of course nothing in your comment deals with the article, you seem to present just another diversion against the lawful rights of the homeless. Stew is a champion of the law as has been ratified by higher courts, what have you done?

You might do the same. The article plainly says TRANSIENT.

Stew Jenkins fights for basic human rights as for example to be able to sleep at night.

For you to lump all homeless people into the same category as the person depicted in this article is ignorant and bigoted.

It’s like saying that all people that eat chocolate are fat.

Maybe you should change your name to “abigTRUMPlikeracist”.

For you to lump all homeless people into the same category as the person depicted in this article is ignorant and bigoted.

Point taken. This guy actually looks much more clear eyed and well groomed than most of his fellow transients. He’s not your typical glassy eyed, red faced, un-groomed, disheveled, wild appearance bum is he. I hope I didn’t insult him with my blatant bigotry.

We should have different classifications of bums so people like me don’t go all un-PC and just lump them all together under the general category “bum” or, as I often say “effin bum”. What do you think– “the socially challenged”? or “the employment adverse”? Or how about the “substance over-indulgers”? Hey, “substance over-indulgers” sounds real PC, doesn’t it?
