A felon allegedly carrying a 40 caliber handgun outran San Luis Obispo police officers, but did not manage to hide from them for long.
Around 10 a.m. Friday, the police department received a call about a man with a gun in the area of Ella and Henry streets. A witness reported seeing the suspect remove a gun from his pants and place it in a trash can.
When officers arrived, they located the suspect, whom police later identified as 28-year-old Dustin Thomas Maloney. A police department press release describes Maloney as a transient of Grover Beach and states that he has a prior felony conviction and has served time in prison.
Officers tried to contact Maloney, but he ran toward 1901 Henry Street. The officers pursued him into an apartment complex but lost sight of him.
Police then set up a perimeter around the complex. As officers searched the complex, they noticed movement inside an apartment.
Officers ordered Maloney to come out of the building. He complied, and police arrested him. Officers searched the apartment and found a semiautomatic 40 caliber handgun under a bed.
Investigators determined Maloney stole the gun earlier in the morning from a location in South County.
Officers booked Maloney in San Luis Obispo County Jail on charges of possession of a stolen firearm, being a felon in possession of a loaded firearm and resisting arrest. He remains in county jail with his bail set at $80,000.
