Should North County euthanize cats to save money?

In a plan to save money, Paso Robles and Atascadero city official are considering adopting a program where animals would be euthanized three days after being picked up by animal services. [Cal Coast Times]

Currently, the county provides legally mandated animal services for cities in the county. The county animal shelter currently has a 93 percent adoption rate and Woods Humane Society, a nonprofit, has a 99 percent adoption rate. Both facilities are usually at or near capacity.

Three years ago, officials determined the existing county animal services shelter was dilapidated and a health hazard to animals and the people who work there. The cities and the county then entered into an agreement to build a new animal shelter.

Several years ago, Paso Robles and Atascadero city councils looked into the cost of operating a North County animal shelter that would not only comply with state regulations but would also provide comparable shelter services. Because the cost of operating a separate animal shelter was more than the amount the cities are slated to pay the county, the North County cities elected to continue their partnerships with the county.

How about giving nursing homes a pet mascot? Let a short haired animal visit the residents. Imagine the possibilities…

And obviously you will organize and perform this community service or will we have to pay for this too? It will involve insurance, vetting, rules and guidelines, a vehicle and a County employee doing a ride-along. Great idea!

Can we put these unwanted pets into the Prison system somehow? Maybe it would help save the inmate population, give them a sense of purpose, help with rehabilitation, AND SAVE THE LIFE OF ANIMALS. If these animals are harmed by an inmate, they get more time, AND we see that they are a danger to society.


Just a thought…..

Or maybe have a program for low-risk prisoners where they work at the animal shelter instead of cleaning roadsides or whatever. I don’t know if that would be enough to lower shelter personnel costs or not but it is something to consider.

3 days is a kind of fast. Whats the hurry? You leave for a weekend getaway and so does your kitty, and by the time you get back he’s walking the green mile heading for oblivion. C’mon, give kitty a week. Just look at that face at the top of the page…

YES X 10. Cats have decimated the songbird population. Cat feces are pollutants. Stop with the house pet mania. Please spay and neuter your pets. The house pet population is out of control. Try having some compassion for HUMANS!
