Angry tirade at Paso Robles grocery store over face mask rules, video

Customers at a Smart and Final in Paso Robles witnesses an ugly confrontation earlier this month when a man refused to wear a mask, and an employee insisted.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom issued a statewide order on June 18 that requires all Californians to wear face coverings in public places, such as grocery stores. Smart and Final then posted signs requiring their customers to wear masks while shopping in their stores.

The man entered the store without a mask, prompting a store clerk to give him a mask to wear, but he stuck it in his pocket. After arguing with the clerk, the man put the mask on for a few seconds before taking it off.

In the end, a Paso Robles police officer escorted the man from the store.

I’m not a big mask guy but if a business wants you to wear one than you should or don’t go in. Pretty simple. That guy was also an embarrassment, his parents should be very proud.

No wonder Paso has so many covid 19 cases – due to people like this man. Thank you Smart and Final employees for helping to protect the public. If people don’t want to abide by a private businesses’ requirements, go elsewhere.

Personally I think part of the reason Paso has so many cases is because the people taking the COVID tests(back awhile) was taking the tests and not performing proper PPE. Did not change gloves between patients, among several other things done improperly. I do not know how they are done now, and hate to assume its the same way…but our cases have increased here. Totally unprofessional and disgusting.

Clearly not a medical professional. The people who do the testing are medical professionals who use PPE daily in their professions. The increase in cases is a result of lack of social distancing, sheltering in place and mask wearing.

Just because the guy in this video shows signs of obvious cognitive delay, doesn’t mean he qualifies as disabled. Only testing can quality him for ADA — and the star of this video definitely prefers less testing.

He should have been arrested for assault. I wish the other customers had ganged up on him. Kudos to the staff person who insisted he wear a mask, she should receive the massive fine that should be levied against the bum.

I feel like she might have contracted corona virus from him screaming in her face in such close proximity, mask or no. What a peach he is.


While I admire her tenacity, I’m on the fence about her approach. I also can’t help but wonder if that had been a man telling him to put a mask on if he wouldn’t have complied. He sure scurried when the men in uniform showed up (police?).

Before you choose a side of the fence, find out about her job and what she’s required to do in such a situation by her employer.

She had a man behind the entire time.There was a gentleman in white cowboy hat that was right behind the entire time keeping a eye out for her. Thank you whoever you are!

The female Smart & Final employee was mad because the customer wouldn’t wear a mask. She was following him, waving a mask and he wouldn’t comply. She was completely out of line and was harassing him. She put herself in a dangerous position and was an idiot for following the guy around the store.


Also, I’ve shopped at Smart & Final, WalMart, Target & other stores in Paso and have seen MANY non-mask wearing customers, especially elderly people. The Smart & Final employee probably didn’t harass other customers; she somehow saw this guy as an easy target.

Not sure why I’m “part of the problem” simply because I pointed out that the Smart & Final employee handled the situation totally wrong. She was unprofessional and should not have gotten in the customer’s face.


I wear a mask in stores. Always. I don’t like it BUT I feel that if the store requests it, I will abide by their request because it is THEIR store and THEY can set the rules.


However, if a customer isn’t wearing a mask, a store employee is foolish to follow him/her around, waving a mask, trying to grab his/her shopping cart…that’s just asking for trouble and a physical altercation may take place.


The Smart & Final employee was pissed that the guy wouldn’t comply. She obviously wasn’t worried about contracting covid because she stayed close to him the whole time. Dumb move on her part.

You’re a part of the problem because if people act responsibly this thing goes away and that includes wearing masks in indoor and public places yet here you are supporting those who won’t support common sense rules.

You have no clue what she was feeling. She didn’t seem angry to me. She looked like one of the other millions of front line workers in this country right now having to babysit children like that punk who come into where she works. You think she’d be following him around if she wasn’t required to by her employer? All you brilliant anti-science people get used to it. FYI starting Monday at CVS they are required. Starting August 1st you will need them at Target. Walmart, Home Depot, Lowe’s already require them as well as grocery stores and even Starbucks. Time to get use to our new normal.

Not all people are dumb, but most Trump supporters are, not all, I voted for Trump out of Clinton-disgust, but he never delivered. The same lobbyists are firmly in charge. Might as well try Biden/AOC and see what change they deliver, for better or worse. Trump supporters are refusing to wear masks as a political statement. I say let the Republican convention go on with no masks or social distancing. A fine experiment.
