California population drops by 500,000 over two years

By JOSH FRIEDMAN

California lost more residents than any state other than New York during the pandemic, with the Golden State’s population declining by more than a half million residents over a span of a little more than two years.

Between April 2020 and July 2022, the state lost 508,903 residents, according to United States Census Bureau data. California’s population decreased from 39,538,245 in April 2020 to 39,029,342 in July 2022.

During that period, more than 700,000 residents left the state. High housing costs are cited as the primary reason for the exodus. [LA Times]

Additional reasons include long commutes, crime, crowding and pollution in large urban areas. The ability to work remotely and not need to live near a big city also factored into the exodus.

Over the same span, Texas gained nearly 900,000 residents.

Good. Go. Please leave, and don’t come back. Honestly.

When I came to California the population was 15 million would love to see another 25 million leave.

California has turned into a police-state: Too much government interference and over-regulation. No respect for the Bill of Rights and too many laws.

a police-state” California? Lol projecting, it’s always projecting.

GOP: Gaslight Obstruct Project, t-shirts are available.

Have you seen all the California gun laws? Crazy!

People are always chasing rainbows. I know what this place (SLOCO) is and what other places are. I’m staying, as is family. My good neighbors are staying, as are their families. Real people sit, other types git.

As a percentage of population…

California does not make the top 10. 40 million people in CA. We could stand to lose a few more.

I know quite a few people who have moved to other states … Their new states climate not so great .. Homeowners insurance is sky high … Crime and drugs major problems in their new state … I know people in Ohio who are paying $7300.00 a year in property taxes on a house they purchased for 226k …and its current value not much higher than the purchase price …Most Texas beach front towns have outrageous property taxes and home owners insurance …Texas beach towns weather is not great …There is affordable Texas beach towns , but the crime rate is worse than any Calif beach town even worse than Cayucos .Plus the threat of natural wind born storms and flooding …Sure moving to a new state is a great adventure , but after the excitement wears off …suffering in Calif looks much better ….Criminals would be drawn to Texas due to Texas law allows for felonies to disappear from their records very quickly …In mid 2023 Calif will enact the same laws to remove felonies after 4 years with no new charges ….it is what it is

“During that period, more than 700,000 residents left the state….

Over the same span, Texas gained nearly 900,000 residents.”

Well, now, to a reasonable person, that might just tell you something right there…..

I’m under the impression people are leaving due to the high taxes, gas prices & etc.

Talk about out of touch. The average Californian pays astronomically more of their income towards high rent than taxes and gas prices. The difference between Californians and Texans percentage of personal income spent on taxes is 3 percent (US Census, Bureau of Econ Analysis), significant! But not the real reason. Time for the more unpopular part – get the government out of housing regulation, end zoning and absurd restrictions on density and use. More housing = more affordability

I thought the drive into town was a little quicker today…
