Group plans anti-Trump protests across San Luis Obispo County

A group opposed to the Trump administration is planning three protests in San Luis Obispo County on Saturday.

The group’s coordinated events across SLO County are expected to draw 4,000 to
5,000 participants to declare that in America we don’t put up with would-be kings, according to a press release. The “No Kings” protests are planned in more than 1,800 cities.

“What we’re witnessing is an unprecedented federal override of state authority and the militarization of domestic law enforcement,” said Linda Baker, SLO County coordinator for the ‘No Kings’ mobilization. “Recent events in Los Angeles have raised serious concerns about federal authority and the appropriate use of military resources. The deployment of military forces is an unnecessary abuse of power intended to chill dissent against attacks on our rights, our families, and our communities.”

Tom Fulks, chair of the San Luis Obispo County Democratic Party and former columnist for the SLO Tribune, said these local rallies on Flag Day are intended to draw attention to this American president’s war on California and other “blue” states.

“For the first time in history, an American president has declared military aggression against a particular American state, sending armed combat Marines into the heart of the resistance against domestic fascism,” Fulks said. “This salvo against California is the first of what we should expect to be against nearly every ‘blue’ donor state that opposes Trump’s fascism yet pays the most in taxes to underwrite the ‘red states that support him
– and the end of American democracy.”

Rallies in SLO County

  • San Luis Obispo: 10:30 a.m. to noon from the Courthouse steps to Mission Plaza
  • Atascadero: 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the intersection of El Camino Real and Morro Road
  • Cambria: 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the intersection of Cambria Drive and Main Street

I’ve never heard from a MAGA supporter a reasonable explanation of why giving so much unchecked power to the President is a good idea for the Republic.


You have to acknowledge that at some point in the future, maybe 2028, maybe 2032, there will be a Democrat in the White House who will be able to use all these powers that Trump is using. If you’re fine with Trump breaking so many norms: sending in active troops for political show, firing non-partisan employees without cause – replacing them with yes-men, deporting foreign students – maybe citizens – who speak against the government, moving around funding and creating massive new taxes without Congress, etc. Are you also fine with future President Newsom, Booker, or AOC doing these things with the political valence reversed?


There are two options: 1. You’re deeply misguided, and consumed by extremely short sighted political thinking; trading a constitutional tradition of limited executive power for a few years of owning the libs, to be inevitably followed by liberal/progressive whiplash, retribution, and instability; 2. You have deluded yourself into thinking Democrats will never get back in power, in which case you’re admitting everything the protestors are saying is true – you and Trump prefer authoritarianism to democracy and republicanism.

These protests causing traffic backups and congestion aren’t helping the hard-working citizens trying to get to work and/or home from work. I know several people who were not happy that their commute took a lot longer because of these protests on LOVR and other major arterials. I get it that a majority of SLO city is Democrat and don’t like that President Trump was elected, but please, don’t cause problems for all of us because of your opinions about the current administration. When many of us didn’t like that Biden won the 2020 election and didn’t agree at all with his administration’s actions, we didn’t organize protests and cause problems for the locals. We accepted the voters’ decision and moved on. While peaceful protesting is a right that many of our forefathers fought for, trampling on others’ rights to commute to work or school isn’t ok. You only make people angry and resentful of your position and works against gaining supporters who might be on the fence politically.

Trump loves HIS military and our nation’s vets. So much so that he has dismissed an unprecedented number of veterans from their jobs in the federal government. And veterans groups have warned that Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill would erode veterans’ benefits and services with cuts and layoffs of VA personnel.


Not only that, but by inserting our troops on the streets of Los Angeles he puts them into an untenable situation for which they have not been trained. Fortunately, we have not seen a Kent St. type incident yet, but it seems inevitable if he continues to put troops in civilian situations.


In addition, Trump’s military parade will cost $45 million and probably millions more for street repairs in D.C., at a time when he says he wants to cut the federal budget.
