Fairgoers attacked, allege official cover-up

July 26, 2008

By KAREN VELIE and DANIEL BLACKBURN

Three people were assaulted Wednesday night as they exited a shuttle bus after attending a Mid-State Fair concert. The victims contend fair and police officials are downplaying the incident to avoid negative publicity.

Following the John Mayer concert, the trio was about to board a shuttle bus at the fair’s main entrance when two young men boisterously pushed their way to the front of a nearby bus line, shouting “PR13,” a gang designation.

“We were saying how out of control they were,” said 28-year-old Robert Lindstrom, one of the victims. “They were walking in front of the fair yelling ‘PR13’ and elbowing people. I asked a policeman, ‘Aren’t you going to do anything?’ He shrugged and said, ‘I don’t know what I can do.’” Unbeknownst to Lindstrom and his friends, twelve more gang members already were on their bus.

Upon exiting the bus at Von’s Shopping Center in Paso Robles, one of the alleged gang members said to Don Burtis, “Can’t you control your bitch?” Though Burtis, 33, tried to ignore the comment and walk away, he was assaulted from behind by approximately a dozen young whites and Hispanics.

“I was walking up the stairway toward the parking lot,” Burtis said. “I was hit several times in the back of the head. I tried to get to the top of the stairs. They surrounded me and continued to beat me. Once we got up into the parking lot, I yelled ‘Help, Robert, help!’ Robert tried to help, but he ended up getting beat up himself.

“I am really upset the police haven’t gotten the tape off the bus. I believe someone is not being honest. The police or the fair do not want this to get out.”

The third victim, 26-year-old Lisha Beck, tried to pull gang members off her boyfriend.

“I turned around and a guy pushed me back and I saw them beating on Don,” Beck said. “I tried to help and a guy hit me. Don told me to run, but two people jumped on me. They were punching me in the face and I got knocked out. It was really bad.”

Lindstrom attempted to help, and was also beaten. After fleeing the lot, the victims called police, who responded quickly.

“They were obviously injured,” Paso Robles Police Sergeant David Bouffard said. “There are all types of fights at the fair no one knows about.”

Though the trio sported facial injuries, police were skeptical. Bouffard said the call came in about 12:30 a.m. He said the buses stop running at 11 p.m. and the victims said they had called shortly after the incident. He added that the victims had been drinking, and that the gang PR13 is made up of Hispanics, not whites.

According to the fair’s own schedule, the shuttles stop running at 1 a.m.

Lindstrom said he “went to school in Paso. There are whites and Hispanics in PR13. We told them [police] to get the video from the bus and the Von’s parking lot. I personally think there is a cover-up. They don’t want bad publicity and they are pushing everyone to ride these buses.”

The incident was not reported to the public by either the police department or Mid-State Fair organizers. Following the incident, fair officials canceled the Von’s Shopping Center shuttle due to what they termed “clerical issues.”

“This is not out of the ordinary,” said Paso Robles Police Captain Robert Burton. “We follow up on all our assaults.”

What is screwed is that we told the police to secure the video from the bus that very night. They didn't do it and now the tape has been recorded over. The officer made excuses that they can only do so much. BULLSHIT.

The very next night Don's mother and half the bus was again let off at Von's…The supposedly shut down stop.

By: Anonymous on 7/27/08

This is BULLSHIT. I want the police to get those video tapes and identify those thugs. Then I want the police to do their God Damn job and I mean to the fullest extent posible. Is that too much to ask? Those kids are dangerous and violent and should never nver never be tolerated not for even one minute if we can put a STOP to them.

All Gang Bangers need to be locked up. We should start a tent city prison like that sheriff Arprio(sp?) in Arizona. They should wear pink underwear and work for their meals. Every time they would flash a sign they would have to sit in solitary confinement and could not come out until they wrote "I won't gang bang" 10,000 times etc. etc, etc. They would be crying like babies. That would teach them, it really would.

Last night, KSBY report,

"This year, the security presence at the fair has changed. Specifically, there are more security officers to deal with the larger crowds.

"The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Department and the security team said their philosophy remains the same: they said they have a zero tolerance policy. Anyone who gets out of line gets thrown out – no ifs, ands, or buts.

"Because the fair is geared towards families, security officers said they haven't really had any problems with gangs or drugs, but are always on the lookout.

"The fair security manager said there are many places to grab an adult beverage, but alcohol wasn't a factor in the small amount of trouble they had."

Don't kid yourself. Festival Mozaic (formerly the Mozart Festival) in SLO has covered up plenty of stuff like this too.

I was at a pre-concert dinner sponsored by Sotheby's Real Estate and requested a Napa Pinot Grigio to accompany my Wailea deep water ahi, and some non-caucasian approached and poured me a local 2004 Riesling (AKA Edna Valley toilet water). I whipped out my iPhone 3G and phoned the police while emailing them a photo of the perp, and they said they'd send someone right over. But by concert time, no one had showed.

But the horrors didn't stop there. During a performance of the "Quartet for the End of Time," a jolly work composed at a German summer camp, the police called my iPhone, which caused my ringtone, the Concerto for Hadron Collider and Orchestra by Villa-Lobos, to create such a pleasing consonance that Curtis Pendleton reported me to the police. As I was being dragged out of the hall during the Louange à l' Immortalité de Jésus, I started to understand exactly what Jesus must have felt.

The next morning, I called every personal injury lawyer in town and no one would take the case. Shows you how powerful those Mozart Festival thugs are in this town.

I'll bring the pepper spray to the fair and my friend Lorraina Bobbit will bring her knife. Where does PR13 hangout?

By: Anonymous on 7/27/08

If the mexican's want to stop what they call racism then they need to reign in the gang bangers. Hey Hispanic's go kick ass on the people that are keeping you down and giving you a bad rep.

By: Anonymous on 7/27/08

AMEN

By: Anonymous on 7/27/08

RIGHT ON.

By: Anonymous on 7/27/08

And another thing….

Most bangers ain't sh** unless there are 6 or more of them together. I know, I live in Nipomo where Nipas13 resides.

Nothing but a bunch of pussies when alone. Oh sure, they mad-dog, try to intimidate, but if you give it right back they leave you alone. Most are mexicans here. Some wanna be banger white boys too.

The only time they are a menace is when they run in packs. Like wild animals. Same goes in the Paso area.

Most like to wait until after dark to do their evil deeds. That's because they are all cowards.

One thing that would take care of these little turds is the right to carry. If they had an inkling that the victim they were stalking might kill em, then problem solved. That type of behavior would fade away over time.

None of you people seem to get it. We have a federal government that refuses to protect us against crime and disease, in the name of political correctness, brought on by the hoards of illegal emigrants that are streaming across our boarders. This policy has tied the hands of law enforcement nation wide. We have two idiots running for president who continue to look the other way. If local law enforcement also continues to look the other way it is time to take the law in our own hands. As for the so called "white" kids, it is time to send them back to their mothers in a pine box.

I am sure I will be called raciest by many people who chose to ignore the facts, thereby enabling the gangs and crime brought on by illegals.

When this sort of thing comes to small town America it is time to pull our head out of the sand and do something about it.

By: Anonymous on 7/27/08

I agree with "About PR13". They (the gang) are the TERRORIST of our county. If the police and sheriffs can't do something then the people need to show the thugs who the boss is. Now that we are aware of it we can be prepared rather than going into shock over such violent behavior by punks. We need to all have ZERO TOLERANCE and if these thugs need a few nasty a– kickings to get them in line, then so be it. I'm really very angry about this. Where the hell is the Tribune?

By: Anonymous on 7/27/08

Nancy old girl,

You are obviously unaware of this, but Pat Hedges is the county sheriff. You may be pleasantly surprised to learn that Paso does in fact have its very own police department, headed by Lisa Solomon. If you want to make a dent in the crime rate of your rancid, fetid, gang infested city I suggest you put down your beer and cigarette, turn off the tele, climb out from under your cousin, put some shoes on lobby your corrupt city council to ensure A VISIBLE POLICE PRESENCE and a MANDATE TO ENFORCE THE LAW, both of which are lacking in your city which has earned its well deserved new name:

Peso Robbings

Until you backwoods ignoramus’ stop worrying about being publicly called out for what you are and start worrying about fixing your broken, bankrupt, countrified systems, you will continue to be the counties finest in stabbing, addiction, robbing, drop outs, child pregnancy, illiteracy and overall pissing up the wall.

By: Anonymous on 7/27/08

Always dreamed of living there:

Spoken like a true elitist. No facts as usual. I'm really curious as to why you have such an obsession with incest.

So now having a beer is a Paso thing. You are one strange bird. Typical hater. Hell I must be stupid I don't know what brefast is. lol

By: Anonymous on 7/27/08

PR13 are terrorist. The public should treat them the same way they treated terrorist after 911. Do you all recall when all the citizens attacked a "would be" terrorist on a bus in New York City? I carry a gun and its a good thing for them that they didn't attack me. Unfortunately it's too bad for the rest of the public.

By: Anonymous on 7/27/08

And where are the county Sheriff's Depuites? On round-the-clock stake-outs of medical marijuana dispensaries because of some perverted obsesson by Sheriff Hedges. Drunken thugs roam the streets beating up fair goers, while cancer patients fear being pulled from their homes and carted off to prison for self-medicating.

By: Anonymous on 7/27/08

Hey PR13.. The days of sporting your gang name have come to serve your downfall. The good citizens are going to lobby until everyone one of you is in jail, deported or …….

There are plenty of good citizens that better not hear you yelling PR13 again.

By: Anonymous on 7/27/08

Thank You for coming forward and bringing this to light for the rest of the public. What happened to you and your friends was horrendous and is now only superseded by the “cover up”. The fact that a young woman was beaten and “knocked out” adds further outrage. I would like to see these thugs arrested and charged. I agree that we should all start e-mailing the police chief. I’m very sorry that this happened to you and your friends.

By: Anonymous on 7/27/08

First- To the Administrator of this site. The person with the log on "Always wanted to live There" frequently makes post on your blogs sporting the same offensive rhetoric that he has done here. His post attack all residence of North County and serve not one single purpose or even a reasonnable opinon. He should be deleted. There is a limit to free speech isn't there? I mean attacking everyone resident of N County?? Second- This story is excellent and it's time to round up PR13 and "straighten" those little punks out. The police can do this if they are so inclined. Its also time for the school system to get involved and protect the students. Citizens should never have to put up with these punk thugs. In a one and one situation they would be wetting their diapers and crying for their mothers. We all know this about them so why not bring them in, charge them, give them fines, jail time and then as a term of probation they can't be around each other? Come on law enforcement, do something about a real problem. It seems that Hedges would rather chase law abiding, peaceful compassionate caregivers, maybe he should call in the FBI about something that is a real public hazard.

To I always dreamed of living here:

SLO has some of it's own baggage. You must be real proud of that 84 lumber employee that killed those two girls or the fact that they never found Christen Smart. These are facts not like the rambling crap your throwing out there. Paso has it's problems but so does every city.

Robert has done work for me over the past year and when he called to tell me why he wasn't able to finish a job last week (due to injuries from being jumped after getting off the bus) I was stunned. He's such a laid-back, friendly guy and not someone who would provoke a fight with one, let alone a dozen, gang-bangers. After checking local news sources for the story and smelling a cover-up, I emailed Dave Congalton and he urged Robert to call in and tell his story. Anyone who heard him (you can listen to the podcast from fri around 6:05 on 920kvec.com) can tell Robert's mostly concerned for the welfare of others who might unknowingly put themselves or their families in danger. He just wants the fair to protect people. Personally, knowing he cannot afford to lose work, I hope he is compensated for his injuries and lost work. And they ought to give him a life-time pass to the fair.

By: Anonymous on 7/27/08

After reading all these comments I can only figure your from that sissy town of SLO. If you don't like it here don't come, i'm pretty sure we will survive without your liberal thinking bulls@#%. Your telling me that SLO has no crime…give me a break. Worry about your own town we're doing fine up here.

Quite right, stop the Von's shuttle and fire some mongoloid fair employee.

That'll sort out the problem straight away.

Better yet, let's have The Trib report about it on the front page of the Local section, right below Orchestra Tour Skips North Korea. I can think of no better way to stop our fine, upstanding north county bretheren from snorting and stabbing.

Sorted.

This is ridiculous. I'm sorry but I find it really disconcerting that an officer would be so ignorant as to comment about PR13 consisting of "hispanics and not whites." Seriously? There is a growing problem with gangs in Paso Robles – I work with teenagers and I see it emerging with kids as young as ten and eleven, trying to follow in an older sibling's footsteps. Some of these kids happen to be white, some are hispanic and other. They do not all consist of one specific race. There is a huge problem in the schools with bullying and fights because of these little "wannabe" kids running around sporting gang signs and colors. It may seem that this really is nothing more than just a bunch of punk kids, but it's so much more, it's burgeoning and it needs to be addressed. Anyone who has ever even been to a PRHS football game from out of town knows what I'm talking about. When I was 12 years old going to Flamson Middle School in 91-92 there was a big issue, I was beat up outside the girl's locker room by a little "wannabe" gang banger and her friends. It was completely unwarranted and un-provoked. So that was the end of my public school experience in "Good old" Paso Robles. I'm so sorry this happened and that nothing was done, Robert is a good friend of mine and an upstanding citizen. I think a mass email might be warranted to our current Chief of Police, Lisa Solomon. http://www.prcity.com/government/departments/poli

I heard this guy (Robert?) interviewed on KVEC Friday night. He told Congalton he wasn't angry and that he would continue to attend the fair. His frustration was with the cover up by the Fair. They put out a press release announcing the cancellation of the Von's shuttle stop but didn't say why.

Somebody should be fired over this.

The only people who cannot recognize the fair as an Open Air Mental Ward are those that genetically belong in such an environment, i.e., 99% of north county residents.

By: Anonymous on 7/27/08

Maybe they (police chief Solomon) might want to consider stopping the fair next year and bring back the car show. It's only a matter of time until these thugs shoot and/or stab someone to death at the fair.

By: Anonymous on 7/27/08

This incident as well as a LOT of other assaults on persons in Paso are dutifully recorded by police. They may not be very talkative. But it is the duty of the press to examine, interpret and report on these incidents as they relate to the public safety and welfare. There is no real reason this shoud not have been reported in the Trib the day after it happened. Plain and simple, this was a purposely hidden event. Certain people have a vested interest in a peaceful illusion during fair time. Don't blame the cops. Blame the Trib. Thanks, UNSLO!

By: Anonymous on 7/27/08

This would have been the perfect time to have a gun. The thugs would be pushin up daisies.

By: Anonymous on 7/27/08

Thanks for the heads up. I won't be using any shuttle buses when I attend the fair this year. Looks like I should bring my pepper spray too. This should be reported in the Trib as well.

By: Anonymous on 7/27/08

Paso has mexican gang problems because the police don't clamp down on them. Its called giving them a "serious talking to" and them running through the jail house for a long time. Paso is becoming dangerous and going down hill fast.

By: Anonymous on 7/27/08

This is an outrage. People should be informed and protected fron this behavior. If the police would make an example of this behavior and went looking for these wise guys (via the tapes) and arrested them it would go along way to protect the public and send a message to the punks. The court should give them all a stiff sentence and fines. Why do we all "put up" with this crap? Start carrying mace and stun guns if your going to the fair folks.

By: Anonymous on 7/27/08

According to KPRL, the shuttle is not allowed at Von's. It is stopping at PRHS. No matter. Paso is no longer the town it used to be.

By: Anonymous on 7/27/08

This is the dark side of wine country. Hope those Amgen bikers know what they're getting in for next year. Paso has a really bad gang problem that nobody talks about.

Thanks for the heads up. I won't be using any shuttle buses when I attend the fair this year. Looks like I should bring my pepper spray too. This should be reported in the Trib as well.

Paso has mexican gang problems because the police don't clamp down on them. Its called giving them a "serious talking to" and them running through the jail house for a long time. Paso is becoming dangerous and going down hill fast.

According to KPRL, the shuttle is not allowed at Von's. It is stopping at PRHS. No matter. Paso is no longer the town it used to be.

This is the dark side of wine country. Hope those Amgen bikers know what they're getting in for next year. Paso has a really bad gang problem that nobody talks about.

“There are all types of fights at the fair no one knows about.”

Oh, OK then, That makes me feel better.

Sorry, I didn't mean to be cynical, I was beat up for no reason years ago by some bangers and my daughter got towed from the same parking lot for going to the fair.

Now this might make it to the Sunday Tribune. What are all the tow jockey's going to do for quick cash?
