Ferrara now chasing write-in Hill

November 7, 2014

AG racerBy DANIEL BLACKBURN

At the tail end of a race he never expected to run, Arroyo Grande Mayor Tony Ferrara will spend the weekend mulling vote totals announced by county voting officials Friday afternoon showing a write-in candidate leading him by 43 votes.

At day’s end, Ferrara still could not crack 50 percent of the votes cast — his unofficial total was 2,896, or 49.63 percent, against those for “write-in,” 2,939, or 50.37 percent.

Most of those write-in votes will likely go to Jim Hill, whose last-minute entry into the campaign to unseat Ferrara gained momentum rapidly and whose success so far has astounded even the most jaded political observers.

In Arroyo Grande, 387 ballots remain to be counted. Those include 164 vote-by-mail ballots; 184 provisional ballots; and 115 election night non-processed ballots.

At present, the counted “write-in” votes incorporate all names written on the ballot, and may or may not be Hill’s. A ballot-by-ballot examination will be conducted by county clerk-recorder officials.

Then, if a recount is needed, additional ballots — those which did not have a blackened oval next to a write-in’s name– would then be tallied. There are about 900 of those, officials said.

Official results might not be final until Wednesday, and if a recount becomes necessary, this race might not be determined until near Thanksgiving.

Ferrara is the newly-elected president of the League of California Cities, a position now jeopardized by Hill’s unexpectedly strong challenge.

At my morning coffee stop today, a gentleman I’d never spoken with said, “well, did we win yet?”

After more than a week ad a half, it was nice to be able to say, “yes, I believe we have!”

After all, if the Trib is finally reporting that Hill leads Ferrara it must be so.

Jim Hill was great on Congalton’s show (Dan Blackburn hosting) tonight!

He’s like the AntiFerrara.

Loved what he said, he is not the “talking points guy” but the listen points guy” what a new concept. Wishing we had that here in Morro Bay

Tony, have you finished writing your concession speech?

Unless you’ve forgotten….

Be brief

Show humility

Be generous

Pledge your support

I would just add to that:

“Apologizing for being a doosh-bag towards AG residents would be appreciated.”

Well, not expecting that to ever happen, I though I would be a gracious winner…like I’m sure Jim will be.

He’ll get right on that…

as soon as he finishes the resignation speech for the League of CA Cities

When the Jim Hill votes get confirmed and hopefully before the Nov 25th council meeting, you have to know that meeting will be one to remember, unless of course Outgoing Mayor Ferrara cancels it since it is Thanksgiving week.

Hey all you AG bloggers

Did Tony throw Steve under the bus? Or did Steve throw Tony under the bus?

If you have video of the September 9th announcement after closed session around 10:45pm;please post.

Pelican?

It was KB and JG describing how they did not want the investigation.it seems to have disappeared from SLOSPAN.

Interesting……

I think, in the end, they will both, with much gusto, be throwing each other under the bus.

Yeah, and I bet that Council meeting will be scheduled at 2:30 am, with 10 minutes advance notice.

Of course, you can bet there have been frequent Brown-Act-violating secret meetings about which we probably will never know.

Again, AG’s current city attorney HAS TO GO.

This is absolutely amazing and a tribute to Jim Hill and his supporters. It is a hard-won miracle.

I am told the story of this election was on the national news. Way to go people of AG! So happy for all of you! Will there be a victory party? I dont live in AG but would love to personally come and shake the hand of the man that shook Ferrara’s world!! As well as meet all of you fine folks down in AG that made this happen. Perhaps even get some pointers on how we could get rid of our crooked mayor in Morro Bay, Jamie Irons who just happens to be Ferrara’s lil prodigy. Funny, Mayor Irons was just speaking recently as one of our council meetings about how wonderful Mayor Ferrara is. I heard one commenter even compare Irons speech about Ferrara to that of someone that had a schoolgirl crush. LOL

I wonder if Ferrara will remain in AG? After losing this election and getting booted from the Presidency of the League of CA Cities I really do wonder how someone of his ego will handle being seen at WalMart?

But this is whrre his toadies, cronies, and other @ss-kissers live. Without that, who and is he?

Grrrr…that is “who and what is he?”

You know he won’t go easily, respectfully, professionally, or gentlemanly…

I expect he will whine like a little girlie.

Has Cal Coast News contacted The League of California Cities for a comment? Now that would be interesting! Perhaps Mayor Hill can slide into that position! How are the folks at The Fibune gonna explain this one? ha ha

Oh, yes. Let’s hear what the League of California Cities have to say about their elected leader.

“How are the folks at The Fibune gonna explain this one?”

The first line of the article will read:

Hysterical people mounted a hysterical campaign and mass hysteria ensued – all over an alleged tryst at city hall.

Or, in other words “We continue to refuse to respect the residents of Arroyo Grande who stood up for transparent governance and stood against cronyism, intimidation, backdoor deals and made history with their votes.”

Of course that is assuming the Trib does finally run with an article dedicated solely to Jim Hill’s come-from-behind defeat in little old Arroyo Grande.

I understand Ferrara wants to succeed his house in Berry Gardens from Arroyo Grande and form his own town, Ferraraville, and he will elect himself mayor, that way he can remain the President of the League of CA Cities. One has to wonder though who he will call next time a tree falls in his house/town or he needs something moved.

I think Ferrara will have KB make his WalMart runs for him.

It appears to me, that Jim is about to open a can of Whoop-Ass.

Omg that comes in a can? ; )

Here’s the latest!! So much for not updating until Fri!

Jim Hill has 3116 votes, Tony Ferrara has 2995.

Hill is ahead by 121!

32 ballots remain to be counted.

Jim Hill will be on Dave Congalton’s show tomorrow, Thursday @ 4pm

As long as there are not more than about 85 votes for Mickey Mouse or such we should be in good shape. You have to know Ferrara will demand a recount.

Just curious…how can they stop voting with only 32 votes left? You would think their curiosity would drive them to finish.

Ours is not the only close race, it’s the one WE care about most, but there are others waiting just as we are.

Just an FYI….sometimes people make mistakes and there is no way to take back a downed thumb.

In addition, as I found out from experience, Kindles do not know what to do with the thumbs-up and thumbs-down business. I found this out a few months ago when I decided to be too lazy to sit at my desktop computer to post and, instead, posted from my Kindle while sitting on the couch watching TV and being annoyed by my cat.

With a Kindle, no matter what option you choose, it registers as thumbs down.

I emailed CCN about it….still has not been changed, to my knowledge.

I have gone back to doing most of my posting on my desktop, where the only errors made on thumbs up/thumbs down is pilot error.

Now who in the world would give agag1 comment a thumbs down?

Clarification: Write-in has 3116 votes, not Jim Hill. Only the poll votes were tallied Tuesday so we know that the vast majority of those write-in votes were, in fact, Jim Hill votes. The vote by mail write-in ballots have not yet been tallied so we don’t know how many of those are Jim Hill and how many may be something else. The tally of those ballots may begin tomorrow or Monday. We should know the status this evening.

I think most of our brains know the 3116 votes are for write-ins, but our hearts tell us those write-in votes are for Jim Hill.

Latest posting on County elections site – Nov. 12, 4:00 – shows write-ins leading 3116 to 2995, with a total of 32 AG votes remaining to be counted.

This is a real nail-biter, that is for sure.

Correct. The write-in lead has increased from 43 to 121. The write-in votes still need to be tallied, no sooner than Friday we’re told, but if the tally of those votes follows the same trend as the poll write-in votes which were tallied yesterday, Arroyo Grande will be welcoming a new mayor.

what does ” but if the tally of those votes follows the same trend as the poll write-in votes which were tallied yesterday” mean?

Jim Hill had more votes than Ferrara when the ballots from the polls were counted. If the remaining ballots follow the same pattern, Jim would increase his lead.

Ferrara only outvoted Jim with one group of voters–those who returned their absentee ballots shortly after they received them—before the hill campaign got rolling.

I know it’s complicated. Look at it as a two step process. First the ballots are counted to tabulate how many voted for Tony and how many voted for write-in. That process should be complete today.

The second step is to tally the write-in votes to determine how many of those voted for Jim and how many voted for someone else. The first part of that tally was completed Tuesday. The trend among those poll ballots was that there were only a few which were blank or contained a name other than Jim Hill.

Now the vote by mail ballots need to be tallied. If the same trend as Tuesday carries over to those ballots, i.e. the vast majority wrote in Jim Hill, then Jim becomes our new mayor.

Does that help?

It helps, but it is such a downer….

Look at it this way, Mary. Ferrara votes are all in. He has no more to gain. Based on Tuesday’s tally of poll write-ins, most of those will contain the name Jim Hill. And that even after the clerk has disqualified the most common errors of Tim Hill and Jim Hall. As a dedicated pessimist it’s a bit disconcerting to be confronting this intrusion of optimism.

The tally of the rest of the write-in ballots begins Monday morning, according to today’s update from the clerk’s office.
