Tianna Arata supporters batter reporter in SLO

Hundreds of protestors gathered in San Luis Obispo Thursday morning for the arraignment hearings of BLM organizer Tianna Arata and protester Elias Bautista, several of whom battered reporter Josh Friedman.

Arata’s arraignment was continued until Sept. 17 while Bautista plead not guilty. Before the hearing, protesters gathered in front of the courthouse.

Following the hearing, a speaker said, “CalCoastNews is fake news,” spurring a man in the crowd to try and snatch Friedman’s phone. Several other protesters then pushed Friedman, while others blocked his access.

While covering the event for the SLO New Times, photographer Jayson Mellom was flipping people off and attempting to escalate the violence against Friedman.

At a May 30 riot in Los Angeles, Friedman video taped looters breaking into multiple businesses while several protesters wrote antisemitic remarks on Jewish schools and businesses. In addition, while threatening and harassing Friedman, a handful of protesters referred to Friedman as a Nazi.

On social media, some protesters recommend harassing or assaulting journalists who refuse to stop filming during criminal activity.

On July 21, Arata allegedly led approximately 300 protesters onto Highway 101 from both Osos Street and California Boulevard, blocking all lanes in both directions for nearly an hour.

Arata is charged with one count of unlawful assembly, one count of disturbing the peace, six counts of obstruction of a thoroughfare, and five counts of false imprisonment.

During Arata’s arrest, Bautista yelled at an officer before kicking him in the crotch. Prosecutors charged Bautista with one felony count of resisting an executive officer by force or violence and two misdemeanor counts of resisting, obstructing, or delaying a peace officer for his acts committed against three individual peace officers.

During Thursday’s protest, speakers defended Bautisa, saying he was attempting to stop a kidnapping by cop. The primary goal of the protest, was to get prosecutors to drop the charges.

Friedman live streamed the protesters, who were at times chanting SLO County District Attorney”Dan Dow is a fucking bitch.”

Wonder if anyone will look into the Venmo transactions to determine what the asset portfolio is for these two individuals and report it for welfare fraud. Taking money from others who may need assistance is pretty low. If social services isn’t looking into this there are numerous other agencies at the state and local level that can investigate for welfare fraud and make a determination. If they start shifting money to hide it, you can look into money laundering as well, it’s not that difficult. The shakedown of businesses for forced donations is another form of extortion that could be investigated, doubt our wonderful DA is doing that but someone should.


I stopped going to SLO with all these protests and the false imprisonment issues. It’s all fine and dandy until you’re the one stuck in a car with your kids surrounded by protesters who won’t let you move and are yelling obscenities at you accusing you of being a racist without even knowing you or your beliefs. What a mess….having grown up in SLO It’s very disappointing to see the gradual decline of the city as a whole.


As to the Cal Poly QB, I find it shocking the team doesn’t have a team conduct policy he’s violated. It’s not like Cal Poly has been any good at football for years…go find another QB, I’m sure there are plenty of others out there chomping at the bit to replace this guy. Isn’t he the embodiment of privilege considering he’s helping extort businesses but faces no consequences for doing so Because he’s a football “star” on a crappy football team that isn’t even playing this year?


The mayor of SLO is just a burned out hippie trying to revive the glory years of the 1960s fighting against the “man”. We don’t need you to burn your bra with the rest of these socialists, do your job and make the city a better place to live for everyone, not just your radical left supporters. When you see 60 homeless people camped on bus stop benches, tents etc, do you really think a tourist with kids wants to walk by that? That’s a hard pass….SLO isn’t San Francisco but it’s sure starting to look like it. This mayor will end up like Portland’s, walking with protestors one day, then moving out of their house because those same protestors turned on her. It’s just a matter of time…

You are spot on with all of your comments. Mayor Harmon is a complete failure and is completely unworthy and incapable of doing her job. The actions of these anarchist are just another reason to not support anything she or these radical left-wing extremist promote. It’s complete insanity. They are extremely intolerant, while filled with hate and bigotry. They are what claim to be against. Don’t be fooled.

The New Times has been a local rag sheet since founder Steve Moss passed. Unlike the people who took over Steve was a man of high moral standards and would never tolerate this kind of behavior.

Unless you are a racist, race should not matter. What matters is how you treat others. Many of these protesters are bullies, not just at the rallies, but in their lives. Remember they called the parents of a woman in labor ignorant for wanting to take her to the hospital.


And the two Cal Poly players involved with local BLM have bad reputations at Cal Poly as bullies and thieves. Police reports filed, but never go anywhere, you can’t charge the golden quarterback. Hopefully, the new coach has more ethics than the last coach.


Are they still teaching civics in school, or does this group just not believe in civil rights and freedom of the press. And what the hell is wrong with the New Times reporter?

One more reason to drop football at Poly, at least at the FCS level at which they, and UC Davis, are not competitive, and if to be so means throwing out all admissions criteria. Leave it to Montana State and Eastern Washington to recruit out of the ghetto for no reason other than football. The SAT and ACT are already gone. Is Cal Poly a real university or what? And are we bringing less represented populations in for that reason and to fulfill quotas for that reason alone?

The key in SLO is not Donald Trump.


The keys are electing a GOOD mayor (Cherisse Sweeney) and two strong city council members (Abrianna Torres and Erik Long.)


THEN hire an outstanding new chief of police.


Take those two steps and SLO changes dramatically in terms of shenanigans allowed in the streets.

Im sorry you were targeted truly, if you were attacked, report it. At least it wasn’t cops beating the crap out of journalists and pepper spraying you as happened at least 20 or 30 times over these last months here, a very very large crime dating back decades to obstruct the free press. C’MON Man! Every administration for decades has been working with Saudi Arabia. Democrats and republicans because the alternative is worse, allowing them to cozy up to Russia and China even more and screw the US on energy. After reading this I felt like I was watching Don Lemon or Cuomo on CNN. You can’t cherry pick issues and try and lay it at the feet of one president without acknowledging the faults of the previous one.


Just like the IRS targeted conservative 501c non profits during the last administration. Are there bad apples in MAGA? Sure. Just like BLM and ANTIFA have bad apples too. Every bureaucratic agency has bad apples, it’s about how you deal with them.
